Fred McGriff smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Yankee Stadium where
the Memphis Belles beat the Las Vegas Miners 9 to 5.
 
McGriff led the offense for Memphis.  He lined a one-base hit resulting
in a run in the 4th inning, ripped a solo home run in the 8th inning
and blasted a two-run home run in the 9th inning.  Both teams finished
the game with 9 hits. 
 
The winning pitcher was Stan Coveleski(5-10) who allowed 5 runs in 7
and 2/3 innings. Phil Niekro recorded the save, his 8th.  John
Clarkson(1-5) ended up with the loss in relief.  He allowed 3 homeruns
in 2 and 1/3 innings of work.
 
Wth the win Memphis now has a record of 48-55.  With the loss, the Las
Vegas ballclub's record is 48-55.

Willie Wells had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Babe Adams was able to finish
what he started and was credited with a complete game as the New
Orleans Pelicans defeated the Honolulu Islanders by a score of 12 to 6
at Shibe Park.
 
Adams(9-7) pitched well for New Orleans in their victory.  He
surrendered 11 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings and served up 2 'big
flies'.  A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 6
times. 
 
Warren Spahn(7-13) was tagged with the loss.  He got hammered,
allowing 10 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
 
DES MOINES AT SASKATOON

Al Kaline went deep and had 2 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers topped the
Saskatoon Commodores by a score of 7 to 6 at The Astrodome.
 
Dennis Eckersley(4-3) got the win despite looking shaky at times.  He
gave up 11 hits and 1 walk in 5 and 2/3 innings.  Des Moines finished
with 13 hits in the victory. 
 
Eckersley got help from Cy Young who earned his 1st save. Jerry Koosman
(5-9) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed a few too many baserunners
giving up 13 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

Barry Bonds blasted 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Metrodome where the
Anchorage Gold beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers by the score of 10 to 9.
 
Bonds was a one-man wrecking crew.  He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'
in the 1st inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the
3rd inning and singled which brought home a run in the 6th inning. 
Anchorage had 8 hits for the night. 
 
The win went to Dennis Martinez(5-5) who allowed 7 runs in 7 innings.
Luis Tiant recorded his 18th save.  Jack Morris(4-12) was charged with
the loss.  He served up 5 gopher balls in 8 innings. 
 
'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out
there and being prepared,' Bonds said. 'You try to hit in your own
capacity and not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day
after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.'
 
ORLANDO AT BUFFALO

Smokey Joe Williams tossed a complete game and center fielder Oscar
Charleston went yard and had 3 RBI as the Orlando Wave defeated the
Buffalo Nickels by the score of 8 to 5 at Crosley Field.
 
Orlando came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning
with 3 runs on 2 base hits.  After two were out Max Carey began the
rally when he stroked a base-hit.  Carey was safe on a stolen base. 
Biz Mackey then drew a walk.  Charleston followed next and he lofted
a three-run 'big-fly'.  The Buffalo batters went down meekly in the
bottom of the 9th. 
 
The win went to Williams(7-8) who allowed 5 runs in the game. Addie
Joss(10-6) suffered the loss.  He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings allowing
11  hits and 1 walk.
 
ESCANABA AT ALEXANDRIA

Shortstop Luis Aparicio had 2 base hits as the Escanaba Yoopers
defeated the Alexandria Dukes by the score of 4 to 2 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Bob Gibson(6-13) pitched a fine game.  He went 8 innings surrendering 7
hits and 7 walks lowering his ERA from 5.04 to 4.77.  Escanaba totaled
7 hits on the night. 
 
Gibson got help from Jeff Reardon who was credited with his 2nd save. 
Sandy Koufax(14-7) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in
9 innings.
