Charlie Gehringer had 2 base hits as the Escanaba Yoopers defeated the
Alexandria Dukes 3 to 2 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Escanaba drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
plating an isolated run.  Alexandria threatened in the 9th but Escanaba was
able to put down the rally.  
 
The win went to Babe Ruth(11-6) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings. Ruth was
helped out by Bruce Sutter who recorded his 23rd save.  Christy
Mathewson(14-6) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 9
innings.  
 
'Some losses are harder to take than others' Sparky Anderson lamented after
the game.  'This was one of them.'
