The Escanaba Yoopers edged the Las Vegas Miners at Baker Bowl by the
score of 3 to 2.
 
Escanaba jumped on top of Las Vegas in the bottom of the 4th inning
plating an isolated run on 2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Gil
Hodges ripped a base-knock.  Jim Rice followed and he doubled.  Dave
Winfield then hit a deep fly.  After the 4th inning, neither team was
able to score. 
 
Babe Ruth(10-6) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory.
Bruce Sutter recorded the save, his 21st.  The loss was charged to Tom
Seaver(6-3).  He was stingy with the baserunners, allowing just 5 hits
and no walks in 8 innings.

Three Finger Brown went the distance as the Memphis Belles topped the
New Orleans Pelicans by a score of 7 to 2 at Polo Grounds.
 
Brown(8-5) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He
surrendered only 8 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Memphis finished
with 12 hits in the victory. 
 
Babe Adams(8-7) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 8 innings and
surrendered 12 hits and 1 walk.
 
ANCHORAGE AT SASKATOON

Roger Clemens had a complete game at The Astrodome as the Saskatoon
Commodores won a thriller over the Anchorage Gold in, 3 to 2.
 
Saskatoon scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. 
George Brett laced a base-hit.  Billy Hamilton stepped up to the plate
and he doubled.  Ken Singleton then drew a walk to load the bases. 
Bill Dickey followed, but he was set down on strikes.  George Sisler
came up to bat and lined a single giving Saskatoon the victory as
46,233 happy fans celebrated wildly.  Saskatoon rapped out 7 hits for
the night. 
 
Clemens(6-3) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Ed Walsh
(12-6) was tagged with the loss.  Wth the win Saskatoon now has a
record of 49-49.  Anchorage has a record of 56-43 after the loss.
 
CHEYENNE AT BUFFALO

Robin Yount smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Crosley Field as the
Cheyenne Gunslingers beat the Buffalo Nickels by the count of 12 to 7.
 
Yount had a good day at the plate.  He rifled a three-run blast in the
2nd inning, clubbed a solo home run in the 4th inning and delivered a
one-base hit in the 6th inning.  Both teams finished the game with 11
hits. 
 
Whitey Ford(9-8) got the win allowing 6 runs in 8 innings. David Cone
(6-6) took the loss.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 3 and 1/3
innings of work. 
 
The Cheyenne ballclub's record now stands at 41-58.  With the loss,
Buffalo has a record of 4-6 lately, 48-51 overall.
 
DES MOINES AT HONOLULU

Mickey Cochrane cracked a homer and had 4 RBI at Shibe Park as the
Honolulu Islanders beat the Des Moines Pickers in 10 innings 7 to 6.
 
Both teams had scored 6 runs after nine full innings.  Honolulu was
victorious in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Willie Mays
smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' making Honolulu the victor and
beginning a joyous home town celebration.  Despite losing, Des Moines
out-hit Honolulu 13 to 8.
 
Chief Bender(2-4) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win.
Curt Schilling(9-11) ended up with the loss.  He served up 3 gopher
balls in 9 and 1/3 innings. 
 
Honolulu now has a record of 54-47.  With this loss, Des Moines has a
6-4 record of late, 52-44 overall.
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Roy Campanella had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Sandy Koufax hurled a fine
complete game shutout as the Alexandria Dukes crushed the Orlando Wave
16 to 0.
 
Campanella enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He stroked a single in the
2nd inning, banged out a one-base hit scoring a run in the 4th inning,
lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 5th inning and
smacked a single bringing in a run in the 8th inning.  Alexandria bats
were hot in the 1st inning which saw them score 5 runs on 5 hits and
the 4th inning with 5 runs. Alexandria kept the pressure on throughout
the contest as they scored in 6 different innings. 
 
For Koufax(14-6) it was his 2nd shutout this year. Gaylord Perry(10-7)
was given the loss.  He surrendered 5 runs and 5 hits in 2/3 of an
inning.
