In a good matchup it was the Des Moines Pickers 6, the Saskatoon
Commodores 4 at The Astrodome.
 
Dennis Eckersley(3-3) pitched a solid game.  He went 8 and 1/3 innings
and surrended up 7 hits and 2 walks.  Saskatoon had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Eckersley was helped out by Sparky Lyle who recorded his 12th save. 
The losing pitcher was Jerry Koosman(5-7).  He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings. 
 
'It was a tough one to lose' said Walt Alston 'We'll get them next
time out.'
 
HONOLULU AT LAS VEGAS

In a game for the baseball purist, Mike Mussina(6-1) and Bert Blyleven
(7-9) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Honolulu Islanders finally
emerged victorious over Las Vegas Miners, 2 to 1.
 
Honolulu won the game with a run in the top of the 8th inning.  After
two outs Frank Chance smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'.  Las Vegas
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. 
 
Urban Shocker recorded the save, his 1st.  Despite losing Gene Mauch
was optimistic after the game.  'We'll get over this one.  Sometimes
the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't.  Any one of a dozen
little things go different, and we come out on top.'
 
BUFFALO AT ESCANABA

Don Drysdale whiffed 10 batters as the Escanaba Yoopers bested the
Buffalo Nickels 4 to 3 at Baker Bowl.
 
Drysdale(5-7) gave a fine effort for Escanaba.  He went 8 and 2/3
innings surrendering 11 hits and no walks.  Buffalo threatened in the
9th but Escanaba was able to put down the rally. 
 
Bruce Sutter earned the save, his 16th.  The loss was charged to Tim
Keefe(8-11).  When asked about his strikeout total for the game,
Drysdale offered, 'The fan's really got into it.  It is fun to see them
tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands.  Fortunately, I
kept them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without
the 'W'.'
 
NEW ORLEANS AT MEMPHIS

Right fielder Frank Robinson ripped 3 homeruns and Mickey Welch had a
complete game as the Memphis Belles defeated the New Orleans Pelicans
by the score of 5 to 4 at Polo Grounds.
 
It seemed that New Orleans pitching was serving up softballs for
Robinson to hit.  He hit a bases-empty home run in the 2nd inning,
smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 6th inning and ripped a solo
home run in the 8th inning.  New Orleans threatened in the 9th but
Memphis was able to put down the rally. 
 
Welch(9-7) finished the game allowing 4 runs in the victory. Ferguson
Jenkins(3-8) was the losing pitcher.  He surrended 4 homeruns in his
8 innings. 
 
Bucky Harris was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. 
If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have
won that one. That is what really ticks me off!'
 
ANCHORAGE AT CHEYENNE

Frank Thomas had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Forbes Field where the
Anchorage Gold beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers by the score of 5 to 1.
 
Cheyenne was unable to climb back into it after Anchorage went ahead
for good in the top of the 4th inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2
hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Joe Medwick who
silenced the crowd when he doubled plating two runs.  Anchorage ended
up with 9 hits for the game while Cheyenne had 5. 
 
The win went to Ed Walsh(12-5) who allowed 1 run in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Luis Tiant preserved the game for Walsh, recording his his 16th.  Jack
Morris(4-9) took the loss.  He was knocked around by Anchorage,
allowing 9 hits and 6 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. 
 
Wth the win Anchorage now has a record of a division leading 52-38. 
With this loss, Cheyenne has a 3-7 record of late, 38-53, worst in the
division overall.
 
ORLANDO AT ALEXANDRIA

Kiki Cuyler left the yard and had 3 RBI and Candy Cummings tossed a
complete game as the Alexandria Dukes defeated the Orlando Wave 10 to 7
at Tiger Stadium.
 
Alexandria had 4 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning when they had 4
base hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Fred Clarke who
electrified Tiger Stadium when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly'.  The
Orlando batters didn't put up a fight in the 9th. 
 
The win went to Cummings(6-2) who allowed 7 runs in the game. Kevin
Brown(5-14) was the loser.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 and 2/3 innings
of work. 
 
Ernie Banks smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI for Orlando but his effort
was wasted in the loss.
