Addie Joss pitched a complete game and Mark McGwire had 2 base hits and
2 RBI as the Buffalo Nickels defeated the Saskatoon Commodores by a
score of 6 to 3 at Crosley Field.
 
Saskatoon was unable to recover after Buffalo went ahead in the bottom
of the 4th inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits.  The highlight
belonged to Brooks Robinson who electrified Crosley Field when he
cleared the fences for a two-run home run.  Buffalo totaled 10 hits on
the afternoon. 
 
The winning pitcher was Joss(9-5) who allowed 3 runs for the game.
Walter Johnson(7-9) took the loss.  He was unable to control the
Buffalo offense and allowed 10 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. 
 
With this win, Buffalo has a 45-45 record.  They have been 5-5 lately.
Saskatoon has a record of 44-45 after the loss.
 
DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

Nolan Ryan completed the game without help from the bullpen at Baker
Bowl where the Des Moines Pickers beat the Escanaba Yoopers by the
score of 13 to 4.
 
King Kelly enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He doubled in the 2nd
inning and quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam in the 5th
inning.  Des Moines had a total of 17 hits for the game. 
 
Ryan(11-5) finished the game allowing 4 runs in the victory. The losing
pitcher was Catfish Hunter(2-12).  No one has been able to stop Des
Moines lately as they lengthened their winning streak to 6 games.
 
ANCHORAGE AT LAS VEGAS

Ed Lopat was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and catcher Buck Ewing lofted one into the 'cheap seats'
and had 2 RBI as the Las Vegas Miners beat the Anchorage Gold by a
score of 8 to 2.
 
Lopat(4-8) was solid in the win.  He allowed just 5 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings and allowed 2 gopher balls.  Las Vegas managed 10 hits in
their victory. 
 
Dennis Martinez(4-5) was hit with the loss.  He allowed Las Vegas 8
runs in 6 and 1/3 innings of work.
 
ORLANDO AT NEW ORLEANS

Gaylord Perry mowed down 11 New Orleans batters at Fenway Park as the
Orlando Wave beat the New Orleans Pelicans by the count of 9 to 3.
 
Perry(9-6) was in control of the game from the outset.  He didn't give
up much, just 7 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings.  Orlando finished with
18 hits in the victory. 
 
Satchel Paige(12-6) suffered the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 12
hits and 5 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.  'He was really impressive
tonight,' Paige said of his counterpart.  'Our guys were just swinging
at air.'
 
HONOLULU AT CHEYENNE

At Forbes Field the Cheyenne Gunslingers were battered 10 to 4 by the
Honolulu Islanders.
 
George Kell had a big day against Cheyenne.  He lost the ball over the
fence for three runs in the 4th inning and doubled knocking in a run in
the 8th inning.  Honolulu rapped out 10 hits for the night. 
 
Warren Spahn(7-10) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Red Faber gained credit for his 8th save.  Randy Johnson(5-12) was the
loser.  Honolulu scored big getting 4 runs off him in 3 innings. 
 
 
MEMPHIS AT ALEXANDRIA

Craig Biggio cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Three Finger Brown
had a complete game as the Memphis Belles bested the Alexandria Dukes
11 to 4 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Biggio provided much of the offense.  He laced a base-hit in the 1st
inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, delivered a one-base
hit in the 4th inning and belted a three-run homer in the 5th inning. 
Memphis had 18 hits for the night. 
 
The victory was credited to Brown(7-5) who went the distance, allowing
4 runs.  Juan Marichal(10-6) absorbed the loss.  Biggio was in a good
mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball real well
now.  I made some adjustments last week and they are paying off. 
That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes
along.'
