In a startling finish the Escanaba Yoopers staged a comeback then held on to
win over the Alexandria Dukes by a score of 6 to 5 at Tiger
Stadium.
Escanaba won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning when they
scored 4 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Lloyd
Waner who silenced the stadium when he doubled bringing home two baserunners.
Alexandria out-hit Escanaba 13 to 9, but Escanaba ended up with more runs.
Jeff Reardon(1-3) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Bruce Sutter preserved the game for Reardon, recording his his 22nd.
Tug McGraw(4-2) was charged with the loss in relief.
Sparky Anderson was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough
loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a
terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to
lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin'
on us tonight'
