Steve Carlton reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the Des Moines Pickers
defeated the Saskatoon Commodores 9 to 4 at The Astrodome.

Buck Leonard had a big day with his bat. He caught a hold of a bad pitch for
a Grand Slam homerun in the 5th inning and doubled in the 9th inning. Des
Moines rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.

Carlton(7-2) finished the game allowing 4 runs in the victory. Red
Ruffing(4-3) took the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 4 innings.

Carlton, when asked about his 10 strikeout performance noted, 'The important
thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team?
But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'
