In a tight game it was the Escanaba Yoopers 4, the Las Vegas Miners 2
at Baker Bowl.
 
Escanaba wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they
came up with 2 runs on 2 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by
Willie McCovey who thrilled the crowd when he cracked a two-run shot. 
Las Vegas tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 
 
The win went to Bob Gibson(5-13) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. Gibson
got help from Bruce Sutter who was credited with his 20th save.  Ed
Lopat(4-9) was hit with the loss.  He gave up only 5 hits and 1 walk in
8 innings. 
 
 
NEW ORLEANS AT MEMPHIS

Sammy Sosa hit a homerun and had 2 RBI and Pud Galvin had an impressive
outing at Polo Grounds where the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Memphis
Belles 3 to 1.
 
New Orleans tallied 2 runs in the 3rd inning.  That was all the runs
Galvin(10-6) needed.  New Orleans took care of Memphis with no trouble
in the bottom of the 9th. 
 
Tom Glavine(7-9) was the losing pitcher.  'Galvin gave us exactly what
we needed tonight.' Bucky Harris said. 'When he threw the fastball he
threw it for strikes.  They were really fooled by his change.  Most of
the time he had them chasing it.'
 
ANCHORAGE AT SASKATOON

Ken Griffey Jr blasted 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Anchorage Gold
defeated the Saskatoon Commodores 12 to 3 at The Astrodome.
 
Griffey Jr was unconscious all evening.  The Saskatoon fans hated to
see him approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base
hits! He ripped a solo home run in the 1st inning, tripled plating
three runs in the 2nd inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 8th
inning.  Both teams totaled 9 hits on the night. 
 
Don Newcombe(5-5) went 5 innings allowing no runs for the win. Red
Ruffing(5-6) was charged with the loss.  Wth the win Anchorage now has
a record of a division leading 56-42.  With the loss, Saskatoon has a
record of 4-6 lately, 48-49 overall.
 
CHEYENNE AT BUFFALO

Tim Raines had 4 hits as the Buffalo Nickels beat the Cheyenne
Gunslingers by a score of 8 to 5.
 
Addie Joss(10-5) pitched okay, well enough for the win. He went 7 and
2/3 innings and surrended up 12 hits and 3 walks.  Buffalo banged out
13 hits on the night. 
 
Old Hoss Radbourn earned the save, his 6th.  Vida Blue(8-10) took the
loss.  He was knocked around by Buffalo, allowing 13 hits and 8 walks
in 7 and 1/3 innings. 
 
 
DES MOINES AT HONOLULU

In an entertaining game at Shibe Park the final score was the Honolulu
Islanders 5, the Des Moines Pickers 2.
 
Willie Mays helped send the fans home happy.  He doubled in the 1st
inning, launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 3rd inning and doubled in
the 5th inning.  Honolulu rapped out 7 hits for the night. 
 
The victory was credited to Mike Mussina(7-1) who went 8 innings,
allowing 2 runs. Leon Day gained credit for his 15th save.  Nolan Ryan
(11-6) was given the loss.  He gave up 5 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of
work. 
 
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Bobby Grich had 2 base hits as the Orlando Wave staged a dramatic come-
back over the Alexandria Dukes by a score of 6 to 5 at Ebbets Field.
 
Orlando erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning when they scored 5 runs on 3 hits.  The big moment was provided
by Stan Musial who thrilled the crowd when he laced a base-hit bringing
in two baserunners.  Alexandria had 11 hits in the game while Orlando
had 8, but Orlando had the more timely hits. 
 
The win was credited to Waite Hoyt(4-2) who went 1 inning allowing 2
runs.  Goose Gossage(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He gave
up 3 runs and no hits in 1/3 of an inning. 
 
Casey Stengal was all smiles after the ballgame, 'It sure was looking
pretty dim there for a while, but our guys never gave up - and neither
did our fans - they kept cheering us on.  What a sweet win!'
