Dwight Gooden pitched 9 strong innings as the Anchorage Gold defeated the
Cheyenne Gunslingers by the score of 5 to 0 at Forbes Field.
 
Anchorage jumped on top of Cheyenne in the 5th inning plating one baserunner.
Eddie Mathews drew a walk.  Bill Madlock followed next and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt.  Johnny Evers then stroked a one-base hit.  Evers took second
on the throw.  Anchorage managed 8 hits in their victory.  
 
Gooden(6-8) was credited with the shutout. Vida Blue(7-9) was tagged with the
loss.  He surrendered 3 runs and 6 hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.  
 
'We didn't have a whole lot of chances today,' Tony La Russa said.  'Gooden
just was too much for our guys.'
