Nolan Ryan was on top of his game, blanking Honolulu on just 1 hit and Cecil
Travis had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers defeated the
Honolulu Islanders 7 to 0 at Shibe Park.
 
Ryan(12-6) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Honolulu
hitters.  He didn't allow much, just 1 hit and 6 walks in 9 innings.  Ryan
recorded 10 strikeouts improving his ERA from 4.93 to 4.62.  Des Moines
banged out 13 hits on the night.  
 
Warren Spahn(7-12) was given the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering
6 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.  Connie Mack was impressed with Ryan and his 10
strikeouts.  'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the
ball.'
