The Anchorage Gold and the Cheyenne Gunslingers locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Forbes Field.  The final score was the Anchorage Gold 7, the
Cheyenne Gunslingers 6.
 
Anchorage came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 3
runs on 2 base hits.  Mel Ott led off and keyed the rally when he drew a
walk.  Barry Bonds stepped into the batter's box and he doubled.  Ken Griffey
Jr then launched a three-run homer.  Frank Thomas followed and he drew a
walk.  Dick Allen dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.  Eddie
Mathews got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.  Cheyenne
threatened in the 9th but Anchorage was able to put down the rally.  
 
Don Newcombe(3-5) got the win allowing 2 runs in 1 inning. Newcombe got help
from Orel Hershiser who earned his 4th save.  The losing pitcher was Whitey
Ford(8-7).  He was unable to control the Anchorage offense and allowed 10
hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.
