Christy Mathewson completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Alexandria Dukes defeated the Cheyenne Gunslingers 7 to 4 at Forbes
Field.
 
Alexandria came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring
3 runs on 3 hits.  Eddie Collins led off and started the attack as he
doubled.  Fred Clarke was next and he stroked a base-hit.  Clarke took second
on the throw.  Two outs later Joe Jackson stepped in and he was walked
intentionally.  Roy Campanella came up and he doubled.  Wade Boggs stepped
into the box and drew a walk.  Roberto Clemente was a strikeout victim,
unable to help out.  Alexandria finished with 12 hits in the victory.  
 
The win went to Mathewson(13-5) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Jack
Morris(4-10) absorbed the loss.  He surrendered 10 hits and 3 walks in 8
innings.
