Al Kaline smacked 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI and Curt Schilling racked up
an impressive total of 15 strikeouts as the Des Moines Pickers man-
handled the Saskatoon Commodores - the final score was 11 to 1.
 
Kaline really lit it up for Des Moines.  The Saskatoon fans let him
have it for what he did to their boys.  He lofted a three-run 'big-fly'
in the 1st inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 3rd inning,
doubled in the 5th inning and smacked a three-run homer in the 8th
inning.  For the game Des Moines out-hit Saskatoon 13 to 7. 
 
Schilling(7-10) was the winner allowing 1 run in 8 and 1/3 innings. Jim
Bunning(6-9) ended up with the loss.  Schilling, when asked about his
15 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if
I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other
hand, since we won it feels great!'

In a close game it was the Honolulu Islanders 6, the Las Vegas Miners 4
at Yankee Stadium.
 
Honolulu erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning as they
scored 5 runs on 6 base hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Al
Simmons who quieted the home crowd when he slapped a single which was
good for two runs.  Both teams totaled 9 hits on the night. 
 
The winning pitcher was Greg Maddux(6-6) who allowed 3 runs in 7 and
2/3 innings. Red Faber was credited with his 7th save.  Bullet Joe
Rogan(6-12) took the loss. 
 
 
BUFFALO AT ESCANABA

Right fielder Babe Ruth had 4 hits and scored 3 times as the Buffalo
Nickels defeated the Escanaba Yoopers by a score of 6 to 5 at Baker
Bowl.
 
Carl Hubbell(12-4) had a steady outing.  He went 6 and 1/3 innings and
surrended up 9 hits and 3 walks.  Escanaba had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Jack Chesbro got the save, his 9th.  The loss was charged to Bob Gibson
(3-13). While he was the losing pitcher, he still struck out 14 batters
in 8 innings.

First baseman Jeff Bagwell lofted one into the 'cheap seats' as the New
Orleans Pelicans defeated the Memphis Belles 6 to 4 at Polo Grounds.
 
Babe Adams(8-4) pitched a fine game.  He surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks
in 8 innings.  New Orleans had 11 hits overall, while Memphis had 7. 
 
Carl Mays recorded the save, his 2nd.  Jimmy Key(0-2) was tagged with
the loss.  He surrended 3 homeruns in his 8 innings. 
 
The New Orleans ballclub's record now stands at 46-40.  With the loss,
Memphis has a record of 4-6 lately, 41-48, worst in the division
overall.
 
ANCHORAGE AT CHEYENNE

The Anchorage Gold and the Cheyenne Gunslingers locked up in an
exciting one-run game at Forbes Field.  The final score was the
Anchorage Gold 7, the Cheyenne Gunslingers 6.
 
Anchorage came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning
scoring 3 runs on 2 base hits.  Mel Ott led off and keyed the rally
when he drew a walk.  Barry Bonds stepped into the batter's box and he
doubled.  Ken Griffey Jr then launched a three-run homer.  Frank Thomas
followed and he drew a walk.  Dick Allen dug into the batters box next,
but he struck out.  Eddie Mathews got his turn next, but he was a
strikeout victim.  Cheyenne threatened in the 9th but Anchorage was
able to put down the rally. 
 
Don Newcombe(3-5) got the win allowing 2 runs in 1 inning. Newcombe got
help from Orel Hershiser who earned his 4th save.  The losing pitcher
was Whitey Ford(8-7).  He was unable to control the Anchorage offense
and allowed 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. 
 
 
ORLANDO AT ALEXANDRIA

Alan Trammell had 3 base hits and 4 RBI as the Alexandria Dukes
defeated the Orlando Wave by the score of 7 to 6 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Alexandria brought 4 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they
came up with 4 base hits.  It was enough to earn the victory.  Orlando
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across.
 
Don Sutton(9-6) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 6 innings.
Kent Tekulve gained credit for his 2nd save.  Smokey Joe Williams(6-8)
was charged with the loss.  It was a tough loss for him as he did not
allow an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work. 
 
Casey Stengal was clearly disappointed after the game.  'It was a
manager's nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'
