The Las Vegas Miners edged the Escanaba Yoopers at Baker Bowl by the
score of 4 to 3.
 
Las Vegas came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning
scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits.  Jesse Burkett led off and
started the attack as he drew a walk.  After an out was recorded,
Mike Schmidt came to the plate and drew a walk.  Earl Averill then
delivered a single.  Ed Delahanty followed and he singled.  Gary Carter
stepped into the box and ripped a base-hit.  After another out, Hughie
Jennings dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.  Escanaba
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across. 
 
Pete Alexander(12-8) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 and
2/3 innings. Rube Marquard recorded the save, his 3rd.  Bruce Sutter
(4-4) was the losing pitcher in relief.  By surrending 3 runs in 2
innings his ERA jumped from 4.15 to 4.50.

Vada Pinson lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI and Joe
McGinnity took a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the New Orleans
Pelicans outscored the Memphis Belles 5 to 1.
 
Pinson enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He tripled which brought home
a run in the 2nd inning and bombed a two-run dinger in the 9th inning. 
New Orleans managed 11 hits in their victory. 
 
McGinnity(6-8) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game.  The right-
handed McGinnity lost a no-hitter when Mike Piazza singled with two
outs in the 8th inning.  The loss was charged to Mickey Welch(10-8).

Walter Johnson completed the game without help from the bullpen and
Bobby Doerr jacked one out of the ballyard as the Saskatoon Commodores
bested the Anchorage Gold 6 to 1 at The Astrodome.
 
Saskatoon brought 5 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 4th
inning with the help of 5 hits.  They would hold up as the winning
runs.  Saskatoon totaled 9 hits on the night. 
 
Johnson(9-9), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Big
Bill Foster(13-8) absorbed the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 6 hits
and 5 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT BUFFALO

Right fielder Babe Ruth smashed 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Crosley
Field where the Buffalo Nickels beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers 15 to 10.
 
Ruth was in a groove all day.  He popped a two-run clout over the fence
in the 1st inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 2nd
inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 6th inning.  Buffalo
bats were very productive in the 6th inning which saw them plate 6 runs
on 6 hits.  Even though they scored in 5 different innings, Cheyenne
was not able to pull off the win. 
 
The victory was credited to Old Hoss Radbourn(1-6) who went 3 and 2/3
innings, allowing 2 runs. John Smoltz(2-6) was given the loss in
relief.  He gave up 3 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work. 
 
Ruth was jubilant after the game 'Let me see a box-score' he joked, 'I
want to see how that game looks on paper.'
 
DES MOINES AT HONOLULU

Willie Mays had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Honolulu Islanders defeated the
Des Moines Pickers in 10 innings by a score of 8 to 7 at Shibe Park.
 
Both teams were tied at 7 runs apiece after nine innings.  Honolulu won
it in the 10th inning.  Travis Jackson lined a single.  Hugh Duffy
stepped up next and he drew a walk.  Frank Chance then laid down a
sacrifice bunt.  Mays came up and he laced a base-knock making Honolulu
victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd.  The game was a
wild affair with the lead changing hands 6 times. 
 
Ron Guidry(3-3) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Sparky
Lyle(7-5) was charged with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run
and 3 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings. 
 
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Gaylord Perry had a complete game as the Orlando Wave won in dramatic
fashion over the Alexandria Dukes by a score of 3 to 2 at Ebbets Field.
 
Orlando erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning plating 3
runs on 3 hits.  Biz Mackey led off and keyed the rally when he
doubled.  After an out was recorded, Larry Walker stepped in and he
reached on an error.  Ernie Banks then doubled.  Bobby Grich followed
and he lined a base-hit.  Orlando had only 6 hits for the afternoon. 
 
Perry(11-7) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Goose
Gossage(0-2) was hit with the loss in relief.  He pitched 1/3 of an
inning giving up 2 hits and no walks.
 
'Wow, that was fun!', Perry said following the game.  'Once in a while
you play a game that reminds you just why you got into this business
to begin with!'
