First baseman Mark McGwire launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Wrigley
Field as the Buffalo Nickels pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the
Des Moines Pickers by the count of 8 to 7.
The Des Moines fans didn't appreciate the big day McGwire had. He
clubbed a solo home run in the 4th inning and smashed a two-run homer
in the 9th inning. Buffalo finished with 11 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Tim Keefe(3-5) who went 8 innings allowing 5
runs. Old Hoss Radbourn preserved the game for Keefe, recording his his
2nd. Curt Schilling(1-4) was the loser. He was touched for 3 homeruns
in his 8 innings of work.

In a good matchup it was the Honolulu Islanders 5, the Escanaba Yoopers
3 at Shibe Park.
Honolulu took the lead for good in the 2nd inning when they scored 2
runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Rabbit Maranville who
thrilled the crowd when he ripped a single bringing home two base-
runners. Escanaba made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to
push the needed runs across.
Tommy John(5-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and
allowing 3 runs. John got relief help from Leon Day who gained credit
for his 6th save. Don Drysdale(4-2) absorbed the loss.
Tommy Lasorda was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in
the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'
ORLANDO AT NEW ORLEANS

Graig Nettles had 3 base hits and 4 RBI as the Orlando Wave defeated
the New Orleans Pelicans 6 to 2 at Fenway Park.
Rube Foster(2-3) did what was required of him in relief and came away
with the win. He went 3 innings surrendering 4 hits and 2 walks. For
the game Orlando out-hit New Orleans 15 to 12.
Burleigh Grimes recorded the save, his 2nd. Babe Adams(3-3) took the
loss. He was unable to control the Orlando offense and allowed 12 hits
and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

In a dramatic ending the Cheyenne Gunslingers staged a comeback and held on to win over the Anchorage Gold by the count of 6 to 4.
Cheyenne came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th
inning plating 3 runs using 3 hits. After two outs Chick Hafey jump-
started the scoring when he blasted a solo shot. Jim Bottomley followed
and he slapped a one-base hit. Mickey Mantle then clubbed a two-run
home run. Overall Cheyenne out-hit Anchorage 13 to 7.
Rollie Fingers(3-3) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win.
Mickey Lolich was credited with his 1st save. Don Newcombe(1-1)
suffered the loss in relief.
Newcombe was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that
one get away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our
fans. One minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with!
I just hope I get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
SASKATOON AT LAS VEGAS

The Saskatoon Commodores bested the Las Vegas Miners by a 4 to 1 score
at Yankee Stadium.
Roger Clemens(4-1) was solid in the win. He surrendered only 4 hits
and 1 walk in 7 innings. Clemens recorded 8 strikeouts dropping his
ERA from 3.45 to 3.05. Both teams finished the game with 6 hits.
Hoyt Wilhelm gained credit for his 7th save. Bullet Joe Rogan(1-5) was
hit with the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 7 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.
ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

Christy Mathewson had a complete game as the Alexandria Dukes topped
the Memphis Belles by a score of 3 to 2 at Polo Grounds.
Mathewson(8-1) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 6 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings. Alexandria managed 7 hits in their victory.
Tom Glavine(4-3) was charged with the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 6
hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.
