Designated hitter Charlie Gehringer hit 2 doubles as the Escanaba
Yoopers defeated the Buffalo Nickels in 11 innings 8 to 5 at Baker
Bowl.
 
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings.  Escanaba
came out the victor in the 11th inning.  After two were out Home Run
Baker started the attack as he reached on an error.  Luis Aparicio
stepped up next and he laced a single.  Nellie Fox then smacked a
three-run homer making Escanaba victorious to the delight of the home
town crowd.  Escanaba banged out 8 hits on the night. 
 
Ted Lyons(2-2) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Old Hoss Radbourn(0-2) was the loser in relief.  He was the
victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the
game. 
 
With this win, Escanaba has a 24-25 record.  They have been 4-6 lately.
Buffalo has a record of 20-25, worst in the division after the loss.

In a game at Ebbets Field the Memphis Belles got by the Orlando Wave by
the score of 4 to 1.
 
Memphis took the lead for good in the 3rd inning as they scored 2 runs
on 4 base hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.  Memphis
had 8 hits for the afternoon. 
 
Tom Glavine(5-3) was the winner allowing 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Martin Dihigo recorded his 1st save.  Kevin Brown(1-8) was given the
loss.  He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 4 walks.
 
 
LAS VEGAS AT SASKATOON

Lou Gehrig smacked 2 triples as the Las Vegas Miners beat the Saskatoon
Commodores by a score of 3 to 0.
 
Dazzy Vance(2-0) gave Las Vegas a solid outing.  He went 5 and 1/3
innings allowing 4 hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA from 5.28 to 4.46.
Saskatoon could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th. 
 
Vance got help from Allie Reynolds who earned his 7th save.  The losing
pitcher was Walter Johnson(3-5).  He gave up 3 runs and 10 hits in 9
innings.
 
 
CHEYENNE AT HONOLULU

Mike Mussina allowed Connie Mack to rest his bullpen, tossing a
complete game as the Honolulu Islanders defeated the Cheyenne
Gunslingers by a score of 7 to 2 at Shibe Park.
 
Cheyenne was unable to climb back into it after Honolulu went ahead for
good in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring one runner using 2 hits. 
Honolulu finished with 8 hits in the victory. 
 
Mussina(3-1), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Jack
Morris(2-3) took the loss.  He surrended 5 homeruns in his 8 innings. 
 
 
NEW ORLEANS AT DES MOINES

Steve Carlton went the distance as the Des Moines Pickers outscored the
New Orleans Pelicans in 10 innings 10 to 8.
 
The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings.  Des Moines was
victorious in the 10th inning.  John McGraw led off and got things
going when he was hit by a pitch.  After an out was recorded, Ted
Williams stepped in and he smashed a two-run homer resulting in an
exciting win for Des Moines and a wild post-game celebration by the
home town fans.  Des Moines totaled 13 hits on the night. 
 
Carlton(4-1) was the winner allowing 8 runs for the game. Carl Mays
(2-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 4 runs and 3
hits in 1 inning.
 
ANCHORAGE AT ALEXANDRIA

Third baseman Dick Allen hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI at Tiger
Stadium as the Anchorage Gold beat the Alexandria Dukes 7 to 5.
 
Anchorage had the winning rally in the 8th inning when they came up
with 4 runs on 3 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Joe Medwick
who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he lofted a three-
run 'big-fly'. Alexandria had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short. 
 
Ed Walsh(6-1) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Walsh
got relief help from Luis Tiant who gained credit for his 7th save. 
Sandy Koufax(7-3) was hit with the loss.  He was touched for 3 homeruns
in his 7 and 1/3 innings of work.
