In a dramatic ending the Cheyenne Gunslingers staged a comeback and held on to
win over the Anchorage Gold by the count of 6 to 4.
Cheyenne came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
plating 3 runs using 3 hits. After two outs Chick Hafey jump-started the
scoring when he blasted a solo shot. Jim Bottomley followed and he slapped a
one-base hit. Mickey Mantle then clubbed a two-run home run. Overall
Cheyenne out-hit Anchorage 13 to 7.
Rollie Fingers(3-3) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Mickey
Lolich was credited with his 1st save. Don Newcombe(1-1) suffered the loss
in relief.
Newcombe was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
