In a thriller the Saskatoon Commodores staged a dramatic comeback then
held on to win over the Escanaba Yoopers by a score of 4 to 3 at Baker
Bowl.
Saskatoon came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Bobby Bonds led off and he
delivered a single. Bonds took second on a stolen base. George Brett
then popped a two-run clout over the fence. After an out was recorded,
Lou Boudreau stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. After another
out, Joe Morgan came up and he drew a walk. Escanaba out-hit Saskatoon
10 to 7, but Saskatoon ended up with more runs.
Walter Johnson(4-7) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 8
innings. Hoyt Wilhelm gained credit for his 11th save. Bruce Sutter
(2-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 2 innings giving up 2
hits and 2 walks.
'The only way this one could have been better', said Johnson, 'was if
we had played it at home.'
LAS VEGAS AT HONOLULU

Mickey Cochrane cracked 2 homeruns at Shibe Park as the Honolulu
Islanders won a thriller over the Las Vegas Miners in, 8 to 7.
Honolulu won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Enos
Slaughter ripped a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Pie
Traynor came up and he lashed a single giving Honolulu the win and
sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Las Vegas had 12 hits in the
game while Honolulu had 9, but Honolulu had the more timely hits.
Ron Guidry(1-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and
allowing no runs. The loss was charged to John Clarkson(1-3) in relief.
ANCHORAGE AT NEW ORLEANS

Roger Maris hit a homerun and had 3 RBI and Babe Adams was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Fenway
Park as the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Anchorage Gold by the count
of 4 to 1.
New Orleans promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they
tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for
Adams(7-3) and New Orleans. That was all the run support Adams
required. New Orleans took care of Anchorage with no trouble in the
9th.
Ed Walsh(7-3) was the loser. He allowed 4 runs and 9 hits in 8 innings.
ORLANDO AT CHEYENNE

Rod Carew had 2 base hits and 4 RBI at Forbes Field as the Cheyenne
Gunslingers beat the Orlando Wave 5 to 1.
The game started off with Cheyenne taking the lead in the first plating
2 runs using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Robin Yount started
the rally when he delivered a one-base hit. One out later, Harry
Heilmann came to bat and stroked a single. Heilmann was safe at
second on a stolen base. Carew followed and he stroked a base-hit.
Carew took second on the throw. That was all Jack Morris(4-4) needed.
Overall Cheyenne out-hit Orlando 10 to 7.
Rollie Fingers earned the save, his 11th. Smokey Joe Williams(3-5) was
charged with the loss. He surrendered 10 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.
With this win, Cheyenne has a 29-33 record. They have been 6-4 lately.
With the loss, Orlando has a record of 4-6 lately, 25-34, worst in the
division overall.
MEMPHIS AT DES MOINES

At Wrigley Field the Memphis Belles plated 5 runs in the 2nd inning and
outscored the Des Moines Pickers 11 to 8.
Robbie Alomar had a good evening at the plate. He clubbed a three-run
home run in the 2nd inning, doubled in the 4th inning and laced a
single in the 9th inning. Memphis finished with 15 hits while Des
Moines ended up with 9.
The winning pitcher was Tom Glavine(6-4) who allowed 4 runs in 7
innings. Curt Schilling(3-8) suffered the loss. He allowed 4 hits and
1 walk in 1 and 2/3 innings.
ALEXANDRIA AT BUFFALO

Tim Keefe tossed a complete game and third baseman Harmon Killebrew had
2 base hits as the Buffalo Nickels outscored the Alexandria Dukes 5 to
4.
Keefe(6-7) earned his pay with a solid performance for Buffalo. He
went 9 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 walks. Alexandria went down
quietly in the 9th.
Christy Mathewson(10-5) was given the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and
9 hits in 8 innings.
