Center fielder Turkey Stearnes had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Roger Clemens
pitched 9 strong innings at The Astrodome where the Saskatoon
Commodores beat the Escanaba Yoopers by the score of 7 to 1.
 
The game started off with Saskatoon taking the lead in the first when
they scored 4 runs on 3 hits.  That was all the offense they were to
need.  Saskatoon totaled 10 hits on the night. 
 
Clemens(5-1), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Bob
Gibson(2-8) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 8
innings of work.

Pud Galvin threw a complete game shutout and Josh Gibson launched 2
homeruns and had 4 RBI as the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Orlando
Wave 9 to 0 at Ebbets Field.
 
Gibson had a big day at the plate.  He blasted a two-run home run in
the 1st inning, doubled in the 3rd inning, banged out a single in the
5th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning.  New Orleans
had a total of 14 hits for the game. 
 
Galvin(5-1) went the distance for the shutout. Rube Waddell(2-3)
suffered the loss.  He surrended 3 homeruns in his 7 and 1/3 innings. 
 
'Some days it just all comes together, and this was one of them' Gibson
said.  'I've been seeing the ball pretty well lately.'
 
BUFFALO AT DES MOINES

King Kelly blasted a homerun and Nolan Ryan racked up an impressive
total of 10 strikeouts as the Des Moines Pickers defeated the Buffalo
Nickels in 10 innings by the score of 3 to 2 at Wrigley Field.
 
The score was tied at 2 after nine.  Finally, Des Moines pulled the
game out in the 10th inning.  Jackie Robinson hit a single.  Robinson
was running on the next pitch and he stole second.  Arky Vaughan then
slapped a one-base hit.  Ted Williams stepped in and he ripped a base-
hit giving Des Moines the victory and sending the 19,471 home-town fans
home happy.  Des Moines had 10 hits for the game and Buffalo had 6. 
 
The victory was credited to Tom Henke(3-1) who went 1 and 2/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Jack Chesbro(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.  He
allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT LAS VEGAS

The Cheyenne Gunslingers pitchers essentially took the day off at
Yankee Stadium as the Las Vegas Miners offense erupted for 12 runs
while Bert Blyleven(5-3), with relief help from Rube Marquard, allowed
Cheyenne 4 runs.
 
In the 4th inning Las Vegas scored 5 runs when they had 4 base hits.
The big moment was provided by Lou Gehrig who electrified Yankee
Stadium when he doubled which was good for two runs.  Las Vegas out-hit
Cheyenne for the game, 16 hits to 7. 
 
John Smoltz(1-2) was hit with the loss.  He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 4 innings.
 
ANCHORAGE AT MEMPHIS

Robbie Alomar lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and Three Finger Brown
tossed a complete game as the Memphis Belles bested the Anchorage Gold
3 to 1 at Polo Grounds.
 
Memphis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits.  Anchorage made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across. 
 
The win was credited to Brown(1-4) who went the whole way allowing 1
run. The losing pitcher was Orel Hershiser(0-1).  'Some losses are
harder to take than others' Leo Durocher lamented after the game. 
'This was one of them.'
 
HONOLULU AT ALEXANDRIA

The Alexandria Dukes easily topped the Honolulu Islanders; the final
score was 8 to 3.
 
Alexandria took the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning
plating an isolated run on 3 base hits.  The early run support proved
sufficient for Don Sutton(3-5) and Alexandria.  That was all the run
support Sutton required.  Alexandria finished with 12 hits while
Honolulu ended up with 7. 
 
Tommy John(5-3) took the loss.  He was knocked around by Alexandria,
allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.  Wth the win
Alexandria now has a record of 28-17.  With the loss Honolulu now has
a record of 21-23.
