One run was the difference at Baker Bowl as the Escanaba Yoopers put
5 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th inning and defeated the Saskatoon
Commodores 6 to 5.
 
Escanaba came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning when
they tallied 5 runs on 4 hits.  The biggest moment was provided by
Johnny Bench who brought the crowd to their feet when he smashed a two-
run homer.  Saskatoon threatened in the 9th but Escanaba was able to
put down the rally.
 
Ray Brown(5-5) allowed 5 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory.
Bruce Sutter earned his 12th save.  Hoyt Wilhelm(3-2) was given the
loss in relief.
 
 
LAS VEGAS AT HONOLULU

Chief Bender didn't allow a hit until the 7th inning at Shibe Park as
the Honolulu Islanders beat the Las Vegas Miners by the count of 1 to
0.
 
Bender(1-3) was virtually untouchable.  He didn't allow much, just 2
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.76 to 3.04. 
The right-handed Bender lost his no-hit bid when Earl Averill singled
with nobody out in the 7th inning.  The Las Vegas offense proved no
trouble in the 9th. 
 
Ed Lopat(2-6) was the loser.  He allowed 1 run and 5 hits in 6 and 1/3
innings.
 
ANCHORAGE AT NEW ORLEANS

Joe McGinnity pitched a complete game as the New Orleans Pelicans
defeated the Anchorage Gold by a score of 3 to 1 at Fenway Park.
 
New Orleans had 2 runs cross the plate in the 7th inning when they had
3 base hits.  They ended up being the winning runs.  New Orleans
totaled 8 hits on the afternoon. 
 
McGinnity(2-5), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory.
Dennis Martinez(4-4) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 5 hits and 1
walk in 6 and 1/3 innings.
 
ORLANDO AT CHEYENNE

Ernie Banks had 4 hits and 5 RBI at Forbes Field as the Orlando Wave
beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers 9 to 4.
 
Banks led the offense for Orlando.  He stroked a one-base hit in the
1st inning, belted a three-run homer in the 5th inning, delivered a
base-hit in the 7th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the
9th inning.  Both teams totaled 11 hits on the night. 
 
Kevin Brown(3-9) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 7 and 1/3
innings.  The losing pitcher was Randy Johnson(5-7).  He was touched
for 4 homeruns in his 8 and 1/3 innings of work. 
 
 
MEMPHIS AT DES MOINES

Ernie Lombardi left the yard and had 2 RBI and Mickey Welch had a
complete game as the Memphis Belles defeated the Des Moines Pickers
6 to 5 at Wrigley Field.
 
Welch(7-3) had a steady outing.  He went 9 innings allowing 12 hits and
3 walks.  Des Moines tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 
 
Lefty Grove(6-3) was charged with the loss.  He got hammered, allowing
16 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.  'Anytime you lose it hurts,'
said Bobby Cox 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'
 
ALEXANDRIA AT BUFFALO

The Alexandria Dukes had very little trouble at Crosley Field downing
the Buffalo Nickels.  The score was 10 to 4.
 
In the top of the 3rd inning Alexandria scored 5 runs with the help of
5 hits.  That scoring would be all that was needed.  Alexandria had 14
hits overall, while Buffalo had 9. 
 
The win went to Juan Marichal(6-3) who allowed 4 runs in 7 and 1/3
innings.  Tim Keefe(5-7) suffered the loss.  He was not very effective,
surrendering 5 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.
