It was a wild evening in Crosley Field where the Saskatoon Commodores
defeated the Buffalo Nickels by the score of 12 to 10.
 
Mule Suttles enjoyed a fine evening at the plate.  He lined a single
bringing in two baserunners in the 5th inning, ripped a solo home run
in the 7th inning and doubled which was good for two runs in the 8th
inning.  The Buffalo batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th. 
 
Jack Quinn(3-2) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 1/3
innings.  Quinn got relief help from Hoyt Wilhelm who gained credit for
his 9th save.  Lon Warneke(0-1) took the loss in relief.  He gave up 5
runs in 3 innings of work. 
 
 
ORLANDO AT NEW ORLEANS

Kevin Brown reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts and right fielder Elmer
Flick slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the Orlando
Wave belted the New Orleans Pelicans by the count of 17 to 5.
 
Flick provided much of the offense.  He ripped a one-base hit in the
1st inning, lined a base-hit scoring two baserunners in the 4th inning
and hit a bases-empty home run in the 9th inning.  Orlando provided
plenty of action in the 1st inning which saw them plate 7 runs on 6
hits and the 4th inning with 5 runs on 5 hits.  Orlando dominated
offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. 
 
The win was credited to Brown(2-8) who went the whole way allowing 5
runs. Pud Galvin(5-3) was the losing pitcher.  'I had my good stuff
today.' Brown said.  'As the game went along I started to get the
feeling that I was going to strike out a bunch of hitters.'
 
ANCHORAGE AT CHEYENNE

The Anchorage Gold defeated the Cheyenne Gunslingers by a score of 11
to 8 at Forbes Field.
 
Gabby Hartnett led the offense for Anchorage.  He lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' in the 2nd inning and doubled plating all three baserunners
in the 3rd inning.  Anchorage totaled 14 hits on the night. 
 
Dennis Martinez(4-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 2/3
innings and allowing 6 runs. Vida Blue(3-6) was the loser.  He was
touched for 7 hits and 3 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
MEMPHIS AT HONOLULU

Willie Mays had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Shibe Park where the Honolulu
Islanders beat the Memphis Belles by the score of 6 to 2.
 
Honolulu came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning
when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits.  The big moment was provided by Al
Simmons who made the Honolulu fans a happy lot when he banged out a
single bringing home two baserunners.  For the game Honolulu out-hit
Memphis 13 to 6. 
 
Red Faber(3-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Leon
Day got the save, his 7th.  Jesse Haines(0-4) suffered the loss in
relief. 
 
 
DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

In a game at Baker Bowl the Des Moines Pickers offense put up 5 runs on
the scoreboard in the 7th inning and got by the Escanaba Yoopers by the
score of 12 to 9.
 
Buck Leonard had a big evening at the plate.  He laced a single plating
two runs in the 1st inning, launched a three-run homer in the 3rd
inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 5th inning.  Des Moines had a
total of 10 hits for the game. 
 
The win went to Nolan Ryan(5-3) who allowed 8 runs in 7 and 2/3
innings. The losing pitcher was Ray Brown(4-4).  He was knocked around
by Des Moines, allowing 9 hits and 8 walks in 6 innings. 
 
 
LAS VEGAS AT ALEXANDRIA

Sandy Koufax went 9 strong innings and center fielder Ty Cobb had 2
base hits and 2 RBI at Tiger Stadium as the Alexandria Dukes beat the
Las Vegas Miners 5 to 1.
 
Koufax(8-3) gave Alexandria a solid outing.  He surrendered only 4 hits
and 2 walks in 9 innings.  Alexandria rapped out 9 hits for the night. 
 
Bullet Joe Rogan(2-6) absorbed the loss.  'When Koufax is on like that
it is a tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Gene Mauch said. 'He
always pitches well against us.'
