King Kelly blasted a homerun and Nolan Ryan racked up an impressive total of
10 strikeouts as the Des Moines Pickers defeated the Buffalo Nickels in 10
innings by the score of 3 to 2 at Wrigley Field.
 
The score was tied at 2 after nine.  Finally, Des Moines pulled the game out
in the 10th inning.  Jackie Robinson hit a single.  Robinson was running on
the next pitch and he stole second.  Arky Vaughan then slapped a one-base
hit.  Ted Williams stepped in and he ripped a base-hit giving Des Moines the
victory and sending the 19,471 home-town fans home happy.  Des Moines had 10
hits for the game and Buffalo had 6.  
 
The victory was credited to Tom Henke(3-1) who went 1 and 2/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Jack Chesbro(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.  He allowed
4 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings.
