Hack Wilson lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the
Buffalo Nickels outscored the Saskatoon Commodores 3 to 1.
 
Buffalo scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  That early run
support was all that Carl Hubbell(8-3) required.  Both teams' bats went
to sleep after the 2nd inning with no runs scored after that point. 
 
Jim Kaat gained credit for his 1st save.  Walter Johnson(3-6) ended up
with the loss.  He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk.

Ferguson Jenkins racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts and
right fielder Sammy Sosa collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as
the New Orleans Pelicans bested the Orlando Wave in 11 innings 8 to 6
at Fenway Park.
 
The score was tied at 5 after nine.  New Orleans was victorious in the
11th inning.  Don Mattingly started the inning off right when he drew a
walk.  Burleigh Grimes then unleashed a wild pitch.  After an out was
recorded, Sosa came to the plate and tripled.  Dale Murphy came up and
he cleared the fences for a two-run home run.  A wild affair, this game
saw the lead change 5 times. 
 
Lew Burdette(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 1/3
innings and allowing 1 run. Grimes(1-1) was the loser in relief. 
He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an inning. 
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT CHEYENNE

Steve Garvey cracked a homer and had 4 RBI at Forbes Field where the
Anchorage Gold beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers 12 to 10.
 
Garvey was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors.  He doubled clearing all
three ducks off the pond in the 3rd inning, blasted a solo shot in the
5th inning and doubled in the 7th inning.  Anchorage kept the pressure
on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different innings. 
 
Kid Nichols(3-3) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 4 innings. Don
Newcombe recorded his 2nd save.  Roy Face(1-2) was tagged with the loss
in relief.
 
Anchorage now has a record of a division leading 33-19.  Cheyenne can't
seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'.  Now they have a miserable 2-8
record over the last couple weeks.
 
MEMPHIS AT HONOLULU

The Memphis Belles and the Honolulu Islanders locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Shibe Park.  The final score was the Memphis Belles 4,
the Honolulu Islanders 3 in 10 innings.
 
Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings.  Memphis ended up
winning it in the 10th inning.  Ozzie Smith doubled.  Robbie Alomar was
next and he ripped a one-base hit.  Chief Bender then uncorked a pitch
that was ruled a passed ball.  Chuck Klein struck out, unable to help
the rally.  Both teams finished the game with 8 hits. 
 
The victory went to Three Finger Brown(3-4) who went 9 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 3 runs. Phil Niekro was credited with his 4th save.  Red Faber
(3-3) was charged with the loss in relief. 
 
 
DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

Bullet Joe Rogan had 2 base hits at Baker Bowl as the Des Moines
Pickers beat the Escanaba Yoopers 5 to 2.
 
Steve Carlton(5-1) had a solid outing for Des Moines.  He went 8 and
2/3 innings and surrended up 6 hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA to
4.56.  For the game Des Moines out-hit Escanaba 9 to 6. 
 
Sparky Lyle earned his 7th save.  The loss was charged to Babe Ruth
(6-3).  He surrendered 5 runs and 9 hits in 9 innings.
 
LAS VEGAS AT ALEXANDRIA

Earl Averill blasted 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Tiger Stadium where
the Las Vegas Miners beat the Alexandria Dukes by the score of 10 to 8.
 
Averill was in a groove all evening.  The Alexandria fans hated to see
him approaching the batter's box.  He belted a three-run homer in the
1st inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 5th inning. 
Alexandria made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.
 
Bert Blyleven(6-3) picked up the victory, allowing 7 runs in 5 and 1/3
innings. Allie Reynolds recorded the save, his 8th.  Tommy Bridges(1-3)
was given the loss in relief.  He was touched for 6 hits and 2 walks in
3 and 1/3 innings. 
 
When questioned about the loss, Sparky Anderson said, 'The fans got to
see an exciting game out there tonight.  Unfortunately, we couldn't get
it done this time.  Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all
the smiles.'
