Ken Boyer had 2 base hits as the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the
Buffalo Nickels 10 to 7 at Fenway Park.
 
New Orleans took the lead for keeps in the 6th inning when they scored
3 runs on 4 hits.  The big moment was provided by Willie Wells who
brought a roar from the partisan Fenway Park fans when he bombed a two-
run dinger.  New Orleans out-hit Buffalo for the game, 14 hits to 11. 
 
The winning pitcher was Carl Mays(2-1) who allowed no runs in 3 and 2/3
innings. Old Hoss Radbourn(0-1) was the loser in relief.  The New
Orleans ballclub's record now stands at 21-15.  With this loss, Buffalo
has a 5-5 record of late, 17-20, worst in the division overall.
 
LAS VEGAS AT MEMPHIS

Lou Gehrig touched them all and had 5 RBI as the Las Vegas Miners
topped the Memphis Belles by a score of 15 to 9 at Polo Grounds.
 
Gehrig enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He belted a three-run homer in
the 4th inning, delivered a one-base hit in the 6th inning and doubled
bringing in two baserunners in the 7th inning.  Las Vegas lit up the
scoreboard in the 4th inning when they had 6 runs on 5 hits and the 7th
inning which saw them score 4 runs on 3 hits.  Memphis was not lacking
for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory
eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to
win ballgames. 
 
John Clarkson(1-2) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win.
Stan Coveleski(2-6) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 8 hits and 2
walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
ESCANABA AT CHEYENNE

Dave Winfield ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Ray Brown was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Forbes
Field as the Escanaba Yoopers beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers 14 to 6.
 
Winfield was really in 'the zone'.  He banged out a single in the 2nd
inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 5th inning, delivered a
solo blast in the 7th inning and laced a base-knock in the 9th inning. 
The Escanaba offense was great, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings. 
 
Brown(4-2) lasted until the end allowing 6 runs for the win. The losing
pitcher was Randy Johnson(4-4).  He couldn't find the plate, issuing 7
walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. 
 
Winfield was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and
hitting the ball real well now.  I made some adjustments last week and
they are paying off.  That's what this game is about. making
adjustments as the season goes along.'
 
HONOLULU AT ANCHORAGE

Jim Palmer recorded a complete game shutout at Metrodome where the
Anchorage Gold beat the Honolulu Islanders by the score of 3 to 0.
 
Palmer(6-3) put on a good performance.  He didn't allow much, just 4
hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.45.  The pitchers
took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again. 
 
Ron Guidry(0-2) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in
7 innings.
 
ALEXANDRIA AT SASKATOON

The Alexandria Dukes and the Saskatoon Commodores locked up in an
exciting one-run game at The Astrodome.  The final score was the
Alexandria Dukes 6, the Saskatoon Commodores 5 in 10 innings.
 
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings.  Alexandria won the hard
fought contest in the 10th inning.  The critical plate appearance was
by Roy Campanella who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when
he cracked a two-run shot.  Alexandria had 12 hits for the night. 
 
Sandy Koufax(7-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 9 innings and
allowing 4 runs. Tug McGraw gained credit for his 1st save.  Walter
Johnson(2-4) took the loss. 
 
With this win, Alexandria has a division leading 25-15 record. They
have been 7-3 lately.  Saskatoon has a record of 18-18 after the loss.
