Earl Averill blasted 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Tiger Stadium where the Las
Vegas Miners beat the Alexandria Dukes by the score of 10 to 8.

Averill was in a groove all evening. The Alexandria fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st inning
and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 5th inning. Alexandria made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Bert Blyleven(6-3) picked up the victory, allowing 7 runs in 5 and 1/3
innings. Allie Reynolds recorded the save, his 8th. Tommy Bridges(1-3) was
given the loss in relief. He was touched for 6 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3
innings.

When questioned about the loss, Sparky Anderson said, 'The fans got to see an
exciting game out there tonight. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this
time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
