Ted Williams ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers bested
the floundering Escanaba Yoopers 7 to 5 at Baker Bowl.
Williams really lit it up for Des Moines. The Escanaba fans let him have it
for what he did to their boys. He clubbed a two-run home run in the 1st
inning, delivered a solo blast in the 4th inning and doubled bringing home
two baserunners in the 7th inning. Des Moines and Escanaba each finished the
afternoon with 9 hits.
The victory was credited to Curt Schilling(2-7) who went 6 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 5 runs. Sparky Lyle recorded his 8th save. The losing pitcher was
Catfish Hunter(2-6).
'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there
and being prepared,' Williams said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and
not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by
game, and pitch by pitch.'
