In a thriling finish the Honolulu Islanders pulled off the win over the
Saskatoon Commodores by a score of 5 to 4 at Shibe Park.
 
The deciding run was scored by Honolulu in the bottom of the 9th. After
an out was recorded, Rafael Palmeiro laced a base-hit, and an error was
also committed.  Mickey Cochrane followed next and he hit a single
resulting in an exciting win for Honolulu and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans.  Honolulu rapped out 8 hits for the
night.  
 
Red Faber(4-3) went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the win.
Walter Johnson(3-7) was the loser.  He allowed 5 runs and 8 hits in 8
and 1/3 innings.
 
LAS VEGAS AT BUFFALO

Dazzy Vance pitched 2 and two third innings for the victory and center
fielder Tris Speaker hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI as the Las
Vegas Miners beat the Buffalo Nickels in 12 innings by a score of
9 to 5.
 
The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings.  Las Vegas won it
in the 12th inning.  The key at-bat was by Mike Schmidt who silenced
the stadium when he ripped a base-hit bringing in two baserunners.  The
score went back-and-forth with the lead changing 5 times.  
 
Vance(3-0) went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Lon
Warneke(1-3) ended up with the loss in relief.  He was knocked around,
surrendering 4 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.  
 
 
MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

First baseman Jimmie Foxx went yard and scored 3 times as the Memphis
Belles defeated the New Orleans Pelicans by a score of 9 to 4 at Fenway
Park.
 
Memphis took the lead for keeps in the top of the 6th inning as they
scored 2 runs on 2 base hits.  The highlight belonged to Albert Belle
who disappointed the partisan crowd when he blasted a two-run home run.  
Memphis finished with 13 hits while New Orleans ended up with 10.  
 
Three Finger Brown(4-4) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 and
1/3 innings. Pud Galvin(5-4) took the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 8
and 2/3 innings of work.  
 
Wth the win Memphis now has a record of 26-32.  With the loss New
Orleans now has a record of 31-23.

 
CHEYENNE AT ESCANABA

Robin Yount had 3 base hits as the Cheyenne Gunslingers bested the
Escanaba Yoopers 3 to 2 at Baker Bowl.
 
Cheyenne had 2 runs cross the plate in the top of the 7th inning.  
Escanaba was out-hit by Cheyenne, 9 hits to 5.  The victory went to
Jack Morris(3-4) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs. Morris got relief
help from Dan Quisenberry who gained credit for his 4th save.  Don
Drysdale(4-4) was charged with the loss.  
 
 
ORLANDO AT ANCHORAGE

The Orlando Wave and the Anchorage Gold locked up in an exciting one-
run game at Metrodome.  The final score was the Orlando Wave 6, the
Anchorage Gold 5.
 
In the top of the 5th inning Orlando scored 3 runs when they had 4 base
hits.  The big moment was provided by Larry Walker who quieted the home
crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb.  Anchorage threatened in the 9th
but Orlando was able to put down the rally.  
 
Vic Willis(4-5) allowed 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Burleigh Grimes gained credit for his 3rd save.  Ed Walsh(7-2)
suffered the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 7 hits and 3 walks in 4
innings.  
 
Leo Durocher was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this
one, we just made one too many mistakes.  Son-of-a-gun, that added a
couple more white hairs on this noggin of mine.'
 
DES MOINES AT ALEXANDRIA

Designated hitter Ted Williams blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at
Tiger Stadium as the Des Moines Pickers beat the Alexandria Dukes 9
to 4.
 
Williams provided much of the offense.  He smashed a two-run homer in
the 7th inning and clubbed a two-run home run in the 9th inning.  For
the game Des Moines out-hit Alexandria 15 to 7.  
 
The victory was credited to Curt Schilling(3-7) who went 7 and 2/3
innings, allowing 4 runs. Tom Henke recorded his 1st save.  Christy
Mathewson(10-4) was tagged with the loss.  By giving up 7 runs in 6
and 2/3 innings his ERA increased from 2.28 to 2.68.
