The Buffalo Nickels offense put up 6 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th
inning and cruised to a 11 to 6 victory over the Escanaba Yoopers at
Baker Bowl.
 
Yogi Berra had a big day against Escanaba.  He laced a base-hit in the
2nd inning, ripped a single plating two runs in the 7th inning and lost
the ball over the fence for three runs in the 8th inning.  A wild
affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. 
 
Jim Kaat(2-2) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 and 2/3
innings.  Bruce Sutter(2-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He
allowed Buffalo 6 runs in 2 innings of work. 
 
Buffalo now has a record of 22-25.  With the loss Escanaba now has a
record of 24-27.

Larry Walker left the yard and had 4 RBI at Ebbets Field where the
Orlando Wave beat the Memphis Belles in 10 innings by the score of
6 to 5.
 
The score was tied at 4 after nine.  Orlando was victorious in the 10th
inning.  After an out was recorded, Andre Dawson began the Orlando
spurt when he laced a base-knock.  Kirby Puckett came next and he
banged out a single.  Nap Lajoie then hit a deep fly.  Elston Howard
was up next and he stroked a single.  Carl Yastrzemski came to the
plate and hit a single.  Yastrzemski took second on the throw.  The
score went back-and-forth with the lead changing 5 times. 
 
The winning pitcher was Waite Hoyt(1-2) who allowed 1 run in 2 and 1/3
innings. Martin Dihigo(2-2) took the loss in relief.  He allowed 1 run
and 1 hit without retiring a batter.
 
LAS VEGAS AT SASKATOON

Center fielder Tris Speaker had 4 hits at The Astrodome as the
streaking Las Vegas Miners staged a comeback win over the Saskatoon
Commodores by the count of 6 to 5.
 
Las Vegas won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 3
hits.  After two were out Hughie Jennings started the rally when he
stroked a base-hit.  Speaker stepped up next and he stroked a one-base
hit.  Reggie Jackson then doubled.  Lou Gehrig followed next and he was
walked intentionally.  Jose Canseco came up to bat and drew a walk to
load the bases.  Las Vegas ended up with 11 hits for the game while
Saskatoon had 8.
 
The win went to Allie Reynolds(2-3) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3
innings.  Early Wynn(0-2) was given the loss in relief.  After the
game, it took a long while before Walt Alston emerged from his office. 
In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions.  He concluded
with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon,
as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot
more light-hearted over in the Las Vegas locker room.'
 
CHEYENNE AT HONOLULU

Mickey Mantle had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Cheyenne Gunslingers defeated
the Honolulu Islanders by the score of 9 to 6 at Shibe Park.
 
Mantle enjoyed a fine evening at the plate.  He slapped a one-base hit
in the 1st inning, blasted a solo shot in the 3rd inning, singled in
the 7th inning and doubled which brought home a run in the 8th inning. 
Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was
still not enough for Honolulu to come away with the victory. 
 
Dan Quisenberry(4-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 2/3
innings and allowing 1 run. Rollie Fingers was credited with his 10th
save.  Ron Guidry(0-3) was charged with the loss in relief.  He got hit
pretty hard, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. 
 
'Thankfully we got ourselves a win', Quisenberry said.  'It's great to
be back on the winning side of things.'

Willie Wells blasted 2 homeruns and scored 3 times and Babe Adams went
the distance as the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Des Moines Pickers 7 to 4 at Wrigley Field.
 
Wells provided the offensive punch.  He lashed a single in the 1st
inning, clubbed a solo home run in the 3rd inning and cracked a solo
homerun in the 4th inning.  New Orleans had 13 hits for the afternoon. 
 
Adams(5-3) was the winner allowing 4 runs for the game. Curt Schilling
(1-7) was the loser.  He surrended 4 homeruns in his 6 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT ALEXANDRIA

48,478 fans watched an exciting game at Tiger Stadium.  The Anchorage
Gold topped the Alexandria Dukes by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
 
Anchorage plated all the runs they needed in the 1st inning scoring 4
runners on 4 hits.  That early scoring held up.  Alexandria had a
chance in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Jim Palmer(7-4) allowed 3 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory.
Palmer got relief help from Orel Hershiser who gained credit for his 3rd save.  Christy Mathewson(9-3) suffered the loss.  He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. 
 
'He gutted it out' Leo Durocher said of Palmer.  'I was very impressed
by his tenacity.'
