Right fielder Bobby Bonds cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the
Saskatoon Commodores beat the Buffalo Nickels by a score of 8 to 6.
 
Saskatoon came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th
inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits.  After an out was recorded,
George Brett began things off when he hit a bases-empty home run. 
Bonds was next and he delivered a solo blast.  One out later, Joe
Morgan came to bat and doubled. Saskatoon had 17 hits overall, while
Buffalo had 11. 
 
The victory was credited to Hoyt Wilhelm(2-1) who went 1 and 1/3
innings, allowing 1 run. Lon Warneke(0-2) was charged with the loss in
relief.  He got hammered, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings. 
 
 
ORLANDO AT NEW ORLEANS

Jeff Bagwell ripped 3 homeruns and Satchel Paige was able to finish
what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Orlando
Wave were badly beaten by the New Orleans Pelicans, 18 to 3.
 
Bagwell was spectacular at the plate.  The hometown fans showed their
appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat.  He caught a
hold of a fastball for a Grand Slam homerun in the 3rd inning, belted a
three-run homer in the 5th inning and smashed a two-run homer in the
7th inning.  New Orleans bats were hot in the 3rd inning which saw them
plate 4 runs on 3 hits and the 5th inning when they had 6 runs on 6
hits.  New Orleans kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they
scored in 6 different innings.
 
The victory was credited to Paige(7-3) who went the distance, allowing
3 runs.  Smokey Joe Williams(2-3) took the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns
in 2 and 1/3 innings of work. 
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT CHEYENNE

Vida Blue held Anchorage to 3 hits and catcher Bill Freehan collected 2
extra-base hits and had 5 RBI as the Cheyenne Gunslingers bested the
Anchorage Gold 7 to 2 at Forbes Field.
 
Freehan made sure the Cheyenne fans enjoyed themselves.  He doubled
resulting in a run in the 2nd inning, tripled plating all three base-
runners in the 5th inning and laced a single in the 8th inning. 
Cheyenne rapped out 14 hits for the night. 
 
The winning pitcher was Blue(4-6) who allowed 2 runs for the game. The
losing pitcher was Big Bill Foster(9-2).  He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 12 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. 
 
The win by Cheyenne was very good news as they had been 2-8 of late. 
Now their seasonal record improves to 24-29.  Anchorage has a record
of 33-20 after the loss.
 
MEMPHIS AT HONOLULU

The Memphis Belles had an easy time of it at Shibe Park defeating the
Honolulu Islanders by a score of 8 to 3.
 
Mike Piazza led the offense for Memphis.  He stroked a one-base hit in
the 2nd inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 8th inning. 
Memphis and Honolulu each finished the night with 10 hits. 
 
The win went to Mickey Welch(6-3) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings.
Hilton Smith(7-2) absorbed the loss.  He gave up 9 hits and 2 walks in
7 and 1/3 innings.
 
DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

Cristobal Torriente hit for the cycle and had 3 RBI and Lefty Grove
pitched a complete game at Baker Bowl where the Des Moines Pickers beat
the Escanaba Yoopers 14 to 5.
 
Torriente was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a
fine day at their team's expense.  He doubled in the 1st inning, lost
the ball over the fence for three runs in the 2nd inning, tripled in
the 4th inning and delivered a one-base hit in the 7th inning.  The Des
Moines offense man-handled the Escanaba pitching staff as they scored
in 7 of the 9 innings.
 
Grove(6-2) finished the game allowing 5 runs in the victory. Don
Drysdale(4-3) suffered the loss.  Torriente was in a good mood after
the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball real well now.  I made
some adjustments last week and they are paying off.  That's what this
game is about. making adjustments as the season goes along.'
 
LAS VEGAS AT ALEXANDRIA

Joe Jackson had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Tiger Stadium as the
Alexandria Dukes beat the Las Vegas Miners by the count of 8 to 3.
 
Alexandria brought 4 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th
inning when they came up with 3 base hits.  The biggest moment was
provided by Wade Boggs who made the crowd come alive when he doubled
plating two runs.  Alexandria managed 9 hits in their victory. 
 
The win was credited to Candy Cummings(4-1) who went 6 innings allowing
3 runs. Lefty Gomez preserved the game for Cummings, recording his his
2nd. Pete Alexander(5-5) was given the loss. He was not very effective,
surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
