Ernie Lombardi left the yard and had 2 RBI and Mickey Welch had a complete
game as the Memphis Belles defeated the Des Moines Pickers 6 to 5 at Wrigley
Field.
Welch(7-3) had a steady outing. He went 9 innings allowing 12 hits and 3
walks. Des Moines tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Lefty Grove(6-3) was charged with the loss. He got hammered, allowing 16 hits
and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Bobby
Cox 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'
