Third baseman Dick Allen hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI at Tiger Stadium
as the Anchorage Gold beat the Alexandria Dukes 7 to 5.
Anchorage had the winning rally in the 8th inning when they came up with 4
runs on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Joe Medwick who deflated
the spirits of the home town crowd when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly'.
Alexandria had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Ed Walsh(6-1) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Walsh got
relief help from Luis Tiant who gained credit for his 7th save. Sandy
Koufax(7-3) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7
and 1/3 innings of work.
'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Sparky
Anderson said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say
they have to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'
