Lefty Grove allowed just 2 hits at Wrigley Field where the Des Moines
Pickers beat the Buffalo Nickels by the score of 3 to 1.
 
Grove(4-2) dominated Buffalo hitters.  He was stingy on the mound,
allowing just 2 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  The Buffalo offense
proved no trouble in the 9th. 
 
The loss was charged to Carl Hubbell(5-3).  'He came out with good
stuff,' Bobby Cox said about Grove. 'He threw the ball good from the
first pitch on.'

At Shibe Park, the Honolulu faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel.  Greg Maddux(1-4) finally bested his Escanaba counter-
part, Catfish Hunter(1-4), by the score of 3 to 1.
 
Escanaba lost it in the 7th inning when Honolulu did all their damage
scoring 3 runners on 4 hits.  Honolulu had only 6 hits for the night. 
 
Maddux got help from Leon Day who earned his 5th save.  The losing
pitcher was Hunter.  He allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings.
 
ORLANDO AT NEW ORLEANS

Satchel Paige mowed down 13 Orlando batters as the New Orleans Pelicans
defeated the Orlando Wave 4 to 2 at Fenway Park.
 
Paige(5-3) gave New Orleans a solid outing.  He surrendered only 8 hits
and 1 walk in 8 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 4.08 to 3.79. 
Orlando threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. 
 
Carl Mays gained credit for his 1st save.  Vic Willis(3-4) was the
loser.  Casey Stengal was upset after the game.  'I don't like to
complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said.  'Maybe
they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in
the rule book.'
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

Left fielder Barry Bonds had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the seemingly
unstoppable Anchorage Gold rallied impressively to win in dramatic
style over Cheyenne Gunslingers, 11 to 7.
 
Anchorage came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning when they
tallied 6 runs on 6 hits.  The key at-bat was by Eddie Mathews who
elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he launched a rocket-shot
out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun.  Anchorage had 15 hits for
the night while Cheyenne had 12.
 
Kid Nichols(2-3) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2/3 of an
inning.  Rollie Fingers(2-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He gave
up 6 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an inning.
 
SASKATOON AT LAS VEGAS

Lou Gehrig had 4 hits at Yankee Stadium as the Las Vegas Miners beat
the Saskatoon Commodores by the count of 10 to 9.
 
Las Vegas came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the
8th inning plating 2 runs on 4 base hits.  Jesse Burkett began the Las
Vegas spurt when he cracked a solo homerun.  Hughie Jennings stepped up
next and he slapped a single.  Tris Speaker then laid down a sacrifice
bunt.  Gehrig came up and he laced a one-base hit.  Mike Schmidt got
his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.  Reggie
Jackson extended the rally and doubled.  Las Vegas banged out 14 hits
on the night. 
 
Dazzy Vance(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings
and allowing 2 runs. Allie Reynolds preserved the game for Vance,
recording his his 5th.  Jack Quinn(0-2) took the loss in relief.  He
allowed 5 hits and no walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. 
 
'We really needed this win' said Gene Mauch. 'That first drink of water
at the end of a drought sure does taste good!'
 
ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

One run was the difference at Polo Grounds as the Memphis Belles
defeated the Alexandria Dukes 4 to 3.
 
Memphis scored 3 runs in the 4th inning.  The highlight belonged to
Will Clark who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he lifted
one out of the park for a two run home run.  Alexandria tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 
 
Amos Rusie(1-1) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win.
Phil Niekro earned his 2nd save.  Don Sutton(2-5) was tagged with the
loss.  He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings. 
 
'It was a tough one to lose' said Sparky Anderson 'We'll get them next
time out.'
