Randy Johnson struck out 13 batters and Chick Hafey had 4 hits and 3 RBI as
the Cheyenne Gunslingers smashed the overmatched Buffalo Nickels, 17 to
4.
The Cheyenne fans enjoyed the offense provided by Hafey. He doubled in the
2nd inning, tripled in the 4th inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in
the 5th inning and doubled bringing in a run in the 8th inning. Cheyenne
bats were very productive in the 5th inning which saw them score 5 runs on 6
hits and the 8th inning when they had 8 runs on 7 hits. Cheyenne rapped out
21 hits for the afternoon.
Johnson(4-3) allowed 4 runs on the game. Eppa Rixey(3-2) was the loser. He
was knocked around pretty good, giving up 8 runs in 4 innings.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Johnson - except Buffalo. Joe
McCarthy lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon. He was keeping our guys
off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a
fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'
