Second baseman Martin Dihigo had 2 base hits as the Escanaba Yoopers
outscored the Memphis Belles 6 to 5.
 
Escanaba came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning when they
had 4 base hits.  They would prove to be the difference in the contest.
Memphis made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across. 
 
Wes Ferrell(2-2) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the
victory.  Bruce Sutter recorded the save, his 15th.  The losing pitcher
was Tom Glavine(7-6).  He gave up 6 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3
innings. 
 
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Bill
McKechnie said.  'We take these games one day at a time, but this one
was hard to take.'
 
ORLANDO AT SASKATOON

Gaylord Perry pitched a complete game and first baseman Larry Walker
blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Orlando Wave beat the Saskatoon
Commodores by a score of 8 to 5.
 
Perry(7-5) pitched well for Orlando in their victory.  He went 9
innings allowing 10 hits and 3 walks.  Both teams ended up with 10 hits
on the night.
 
Red Ruffing(4-2) ended up with the loss.  He was knocked around,
surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.  Wth the win Orlando now has
a record of 36-42. Saskatoon has a record of 41-36 after the loss.

Dwight Gooden tossed a fine 3 hitter and George Davis had 2 base hits
and 2 RBI as the Anchorage Gold defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 3 to
1 at Metrodome.
 
Anchorage jumped on top of New Orleans in the 3rd inning plating one
baserunner.  Anchorage finished with just 5 hits in the victory. 
 
The winning pitcher was Gooden(5-7) who allowed 1 run for the game.
The loss was charged to Carl Mays(2-5).  Leo Durocher was very
impressed  with his pitcher, Gooden, 'He had unusually good pitch
placement tonight.  It was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to
watch from where I sat'
 
CHEYENNE AT HONOLULU

Barry Larkin ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Honolulu Islanders
topped the Cheyenne Gunslingers by a score of 10 to 8 at Shibe Park.
 
Larkin was really 'in the zone'.  He cleared the fences for a two-run
home run in the 5th inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 6th
inning.  Leon Day was perfect in relief and got the save, his 10th. 
 
The win went to Ron Guidry(2-3) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. John Smoltz(1-5) was tagged with the loss in relief.  With this
win, Honolulu has a 39-41 record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  With the
loss, the Cheyenne ballclub's record is 35-46, worst in the division.
 
DES MOINES AT BUFFALO

Al Kaline had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers defeated
the Buffalo Nickels by the score of 9 to 6 at Crosley Field.
 
Des Moines had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3
runs on 3 hits.  After two outs Jackie Robinson got things rolling when
he lined a one-base hit.  Robinson was safe at second on a stolen base.  Kaline then doubled.  Ted Williams stepped in and he was walked
intentionally.  Paul Molitor came to the plate and singled, and an
error was also committed.  Des Moines out-hit Buffalo for the game, 17
hits to 11. 
 
Sparky Lyle(5-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings
and allowing no runs. Jack Chesbro(0-2) was the losing pitcher in
relief.  Des Moines scored big getting 3 runs off him in 2 innings. 
 
Des Moines now has a record of a division leading 39-38.  With the loss,Buffalo has a record of 7-3 lately, 40-38 overall.
 
ALEXANDRIA AT LAS VEGAS

In a one-sided affiar at Yankee Stadium the final score was the
Alexandria Dukes 9, the Las Vegas Miners 2.
 
Juan Marichal(9-4) gave Alexandria a solid outing.  He went 8 innings
surrendering 9 hits and no walks.  Overall Alexandria out-hit Las Vegas
12 to 9. 
 
Pete Alexander(8-6) was given the loss.  He surrendered 3 runs and 8
hits in 8 innings.
