First baseman Mark McGwire cracked a homer and had 7 RBI and Addie Joss
tossed a complete game at The Astrodome as the Buffalo Nickels pulled
off a dramatic comeback beating the Saskatoon Commodores by the count
of 9 to 6.
 
Buffalo scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning when
they came up with 5 runs on 4 hits.  The highlight belonged to McGwire
who silenced the stadium when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly'.  This
was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5
times. 
 
Joss(6-4), allowing 6 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Wilbur
Cooper(6-3) took the loss in relief.  'I pin this one on my own
shoulders,' Cooper said. 'The bottom line is I didn't get the job done.
Our fans deserve better than this.'
 
LAS VEGAS AT HONOLULU

At Shibe Park the Honolulu Islanders outscored the Las Vegas Miners 9
to 6.
 
Tommy John(7-4) struggled but was good enough to win with the help of
some fine defensive plays.  He gave up 5 runs in 6 innings and
surrendered 2 'long-bombs'.  Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring
in 5 different innings was still not enough for Las Vegas to come away
with the victory.
 
Leon Day was credited with his 9th save.  The losing pitcher was Bullet
Joe Rogan(5-9).  Honolulu scored big getting 7 runs off him in 4 and
2/3 innings.
 
 
DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

Steve Carlton racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the Des
Moines Pickers outscored the slumping Escanaba Yoopers 7 to 3.
 
Des Moines won the game with a rally in the 9th inning as they scored
4 runs on 5 base hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Bullet Joe
Rogan who quieted the crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners. 
Des Moines rapped out 10 hits for the night. 
 
The win was credited to Carlton(6-2) who went the whole way allowing 3
runs.  Catfish Hunter(2-9) was hit with the loss.  Carlton was humble
when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident
in my pitches tonight.  But, I had great support behind me and I just
threw what was called.  That was an extremely well called game!'
 
MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

Pud Galvin went the distance at Fenway Park where the New Orleans
Pelicans beat the Memphis Belles 11 to 4.
 
Galvin(7-5) pitched a fine game.  He went 9 innings surrendering 12
hits and 1 walk.  New Orleans managed 17 hits in their victory. 
 
Tom Glavine(7-5) ended up with the loss.  He was knocked around,
surrendering 8 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
 
ANCHORAGE AT CHEYENNE

Ken Griffey Jr had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Anchorage Gold topped
the Cheyenne Gunslingers by a score of 9 to 6 at Forbes Field.
 
Cheyenne was unable to claim the lead after Anchorage went ahead in the
6th inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits.  The key at-bat was by
George Davis who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he
popped a two-run clout over the fence.  Cheyenne had a chance in the
9th but they came up short. 
 
The victory went to Kid Nichols(4-3) who went 8 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 6 runs. Nichols got help from Luis Tiant who earned his 12th
save.  Jack Morris(4-7) was given the loss.  He was knocked around by
Anchorage, allowing 11 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings. 
 
 
ORLANDO AT ALEXANDRIA

Wee Willie Keeler hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI and Juan
Marichal had a complete game at Tiger Stadium where the Alexandria
Dukes beat the Orlando Wave by the score of 10 to 3.
 
Keeler provided much of the offense.  He ripped a base-knock which was
good for two runs in the 2nd inning, laced a base-hit which plated a
run in the 4th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the
6th inning.  Alexandria totaled 15 hits on the afternoon. 
 
The victory went to Marichal(8-3) who went the distance allowing 3
runs.  Kevin Brown(3-13) suffered the loss.  He was hit hard and gave
up 13 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.
