Ralph Kiner hit a homerun and had 3 RBI and Jim Bunning dominated
striking out 11 Escanaba batters as the Saskatoon Commodores defeated
the Escanaba Yoopers 7 to 2 at Baker Bowl.
 
Bunning(5-7) looked very much in control throughout the night.  He
allowed only 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from
4.95 to 4.70.  Saskatoon managed 12 hits in their victory. 
 
Bob Gibson(3-10) was the loser.  He was knocked around by Saskatoon,
allowing 11 hits and 5 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.  'All of my pitches
were working tonight,' Bunning said.  'I felt really good out there,
and heck, I think I could have gone longer.'

Tim Raines went deep and had 3 RBI and Addie Joss went the distance at
Crosley Field where the Buffalo Nickels beat the Des Moines Pickers by
the score of 5 to 3.
 
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting
performance provided by Raines.  He popped a two-run clout over the
fence in the 2nd inning, doubled which plated a run in the 5th inning
and doubled in the 7th inning.  Both teams ended up with 7 hits on the
afternoon. 
 
Joss(5-4) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Nolan Ryan
(7-5) was tagged with the loss.  His biggest problem was control as he
allowed 9 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. 
 
 
LAS VEGAS AT ANCHORAGE

Harry Hooper ripped a bases loaded blast and Ed Walsh had a complete
game at Metrodome as the Anchorage Gold beat the Las Vegas Miners by
the count of 10 to 3.
 
Hooper had a great evening at the plate.  He doubled which was good for
two runs in the 5th inning, electrified the crowd with a Grand Slam
home run in the 6th inning and slapped a one-base hit bringing in two
baserunners in the 8th inning. Anchorage had just 6 hits for the night. 
 
Walsh(9-3), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Bert
Blyleven(6-6) was the losing pitcher.  He was knocked around pretty
good, giving up 8 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. 
 
'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out
there and being prepared,' Hooper said. 'You try to hit in your own
capacity and not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day
after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.'
 
ORLANDO AT NEW ORLEANS

First baseman Jeff Bagwell smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the New
Orleans Pelicans defeated the Orlando Wave by a score of 11 to 4 at
Fenway Park.
 
Bagwell was spectacular at the plate.  He doubled knocking in a run in
the 1st inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 6th inning and
lofted a three-run bomb in the 8th inning.  New Orleans rapped out 11
hits for the night. 
 
The winning pitcher was Pud Galvin(6-5) who allowed 4 runs in 8 and 2/3
innings. Kevin Brown(3-11) took the loss.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning
allowing 5 hits and 1 walk.
 
New Orleans now has a record of 35-32.  Orlando has a record of 29-39,
worst in the division after the loss.
 
CHEYENNE AT HONOLULU

Mike Mussina pitched a complete game as the Honolulu Islanders out-
scored the Cheyenne Gunslingers 9 to 1.
 
Honolulu tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they came
up with 3 base hits.  That scoring would be all that was needed. 
Honolulu had a total of 11 hits for the game. 
 
The win was credited to Mussina(4-1) who went the whole way allowing
1 run.  John Smoltz(1-3) ended up with the loss in relief.  He was
not very effective, surrendering 4 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. 
 
 
MEMPHIS AT ALEXANDRIA

Robbie Alomar had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Memphis Belles beat the
Alexandria Dukes in 10 innings by a score of 11 to 6.
 
The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings.  Memphis came out
on top in the 10th inning.  The critical plate appearance was by Alomar
who helped quiet the crowd when he doubled plating all three base-
runners.  Memphis and Alexandria each finished the night with 14 hits. 
 
Phil Niekro(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and
allowing 1 run. Tommy Bridges(1-4) was hit with the loss in relief. 
He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. 
 
Hank Greenberg launched 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI for Alexandria but his
effort was wasted in the loss.
