Willie McCovey slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Escanaba Yoopers
defeated the Memphis Belles by a score of 3 to 2 at Baker Bowl.
The game was decided in the 8th inning. Tony Fernandez slapped a base-
hit. Aparicio then stole second base. Two outs later McCovey came up
and he lined a single. Duke Snider was next to bat, but he was a
strikeout victim. Memphis made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.
The winning pitcher was Bruce Sutter(3-2) who allowed 1 run in 2
innings. Mickey Welch(8-6) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 3
runs and 7 hits in 8 innings.
'This was a tough loss,' said Bill McKechnie, 'the kind that sticks
with you for awhile.'
ORLANDO AT SASKATOON

In a two run game the Saskatoon Commodores got by the Orlando Wave by
the score of 5 to 3.
Saskatoon had 2 runs cross the plate in the 7th inning. Saskatoon
banged out 7 hits on the afternoon. Jack Quinn(4-3) got the win
allowing 1 run in 2 and 1/3 innings. Quinn got relief help from Hoyt
Wilhelm who gained credit for his 13th save. Rube Waddell(5-6) was
charged with the loss.

Eddie Mathews blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI at Metrodome where the
Anchorage Gold beat the New Orleans Pelicans 4 to 3.
Ed Walsh(11-4) pitched well for Anchorage in their victory. He went 8
and 1/3 innings allowing 9 hits and 1 walk. New Orleans had a chance
in the 9th but they came up short.
Luis Tiant got the save, his 14th. The loss was charged to Pud Galvin
(8-6). 'We won because we did the little things right.' Leo Durocher
said after the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over
and over, so when we get in close games we don't make mistakes.'
CHEYENNE AT HONOLULU

Second baseman Joe Gordon went yard and had 2 RBI at Shibe Park where
the Honolulu Islanders beat the floundering Cheyenne Gunslingers by the
score of 6 to 2.
Greg Maddux(5-6) gave a fine effort for Honolulu. He went 8 and 2/3
innings and surrended up 6 hits and 2 walks. Honolulu rapped out 8
hits for the night.
Jack Morris(4-8) absorbed the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 3 hits in 1
and 2/3 innings.
DES MOINES AT BUFFALO

First baseman Buck Leonard had 4 hits and scored 3 times as the Des
Moines Pickers bested the Buffalo Nickels 11 to 5 at Crosley Field.
Des Moines jumped on top to stay in the top of the 7th inning as they
scored 3 runs on 4 base hits. Des Moines had a total of 15 hits for
the game.
The victory went to Sparky Lyle(6-3) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 2 runs. The losing pitcher was Eppa Rixey(7-5). He was hit
hard and gave up 10 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.
With the win, Des Moines continued their winning ways; their streak
now stands at 6 games and counting.
ALEXANDRIA AT LAS VEGAS

The Las Vegas Miners readily handled Alexandria Dukes by a score of 5
to 1 at Yankee Stadium.
Las Vegas jumped on top of Alexandria in the 2nd inning plating an
isolated run. Las Vegas had 7 hits for the night.
Bert Blyleven(7-8) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 8 and 1/3
innings. Allie Reynolds earned his 14th save. Sandy Koufax(11-6)
suffered the loss.
