Al Kaline had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers defeated the
Buffalo Nickels by the score of 9 to 6 at Crosley Field.
Des Moines had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3
hits. After two outs Jackie Robinson got things rolling when he lined a
one-base hit. Robinson was safe at second on a stolen base. Kaline then
doubled. Ted Williams stepped in and he was walked intentionally. Paul
Molitor came to the plate and singled, and an error was also committed. Des
Moines out-hit Buffalo for the game, 17 hits to 11.
Sparky Lyle(5-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Jack Chesbro(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. Des
Moines scored big getting 3 runs off him in 2 innings.
Des Moines now has a record of a division leading 39-38. With the loss,
Buffalo has a record of 7-3 lately, 40-38 overall.
