Albert Belle hit a homerun and had 2 RBI and Phil Niekro went the
distance at Baker Bowl as the Memphis Belles beat the Escanaba Yoopers
by the count of 6 to 5.
 
Niekro(2-1) looked very much in control throughout the night.  He
didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his
ERA from 5.25 to 3.86.  Escanaba went down without a fight in the
bottom of the 9th. 
 
Bob Gibson(3-12) absorbed the loss.  He surrendered 11 hits and 3 walks
in 9 innings.

48,716 fans watched an exciting game at The Astrodome.  The Orlando
Wave topped the Saskatoon Commodores by the slimmest of margins,
4 to 3.
 
Orlando took the lead off Roger Clemens in the first inning when they
scored 2 runs on 2 hits.  Orlando banged out 7 hits on the night. 
 
Kevin Brown(4-13) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings.  Burleigh Grimes preserved the game for Brown, recording his
5th.  Clemens(5-3) was given the loss.  He served up 4 homeruns in his
9 innings.

Josh Gibson slammed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the New Orleans
Pelicans beat the Anchorage Gold by a score of 9 to 6.
 
New Orleans won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with
3 runs.  After two outs Don Mattingly opened up the rally as he drew a
walk.  McCarthy was running on the next pitch and he stole second. 
Gibson then was walked intentionally.  Roger Maris followed and he
launched a three-run homer.  New Orleans finished with 9 hits in the
victory. 
 
The victory was credited to Satchel Paige(11-5) who went 8 innings,
allowing 6 runs. Bob Lemon got the save, his 1st.  The loss was charged
to Hal Newhouser(0-1) in relief.  He allowed New Orleans 3 runs in 2
innings of work. 
 
'I was really seeing the ball tonight,' Gibson said 'I wish it was
always this easy.'
 
CHEYENNE AT HONOLULU

Al Simmons touched them all and had 3 RBI as the Honolulu Islanders
defeated the Cheyenne Gunslingers 4 to 2 at Shibe Park.
 
Warren Spahn(5-10) earned his pay with a solid performance for
Honolulu.  He went 7 innings surrendering 5 hits and 5 walks.  Honolulu
finished with just 4 hits in the victory. 
 
Leon Day recorded his 11th save.  Randy Johnson(5-11) was hit with the
loss.  He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 5 walks.
 
 
DES MOINES AT BUFFALO

Third baseman Paul Molitor had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Nolan Ryan
dominated striking out 11 Buffalo batters as the Des Moines Pickers
outscored the Buffalo Nickels 5 to 4.
 
Ryan(9-5) gave a fine effort for Des Moines.  He allowed 6 hits and 6
walks in 7 and 1/3 innings and served up 2 'big flies'.  Buffalo proved
to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. 
 
Sparky Lyle earned the save, his 11th. The losing pitcher was Addie
Joss(7-5).  Ryan was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well,
it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead
of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still
and quiet.  Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd
out of the game.'

In an entertaining game at Yankee Stadium the final score was the
Alexandria Dukes 9, the Las Vegas Miners 6 in 11 innings.
 
Both teams had scored 4 runs after nine full innings.  Alexandria was
victorious in the 11th inning.  The critical plate appearance was by
Alan Trammell who silenced Yankee Stadium as he doubled plating all
three baserunners.  Alexandria had 13 hits for the night. 
 
The winning pitcher was Tug McGraw(4-1) who allowed 1 run in 2 and 1/3
innings. Dazzy Vance(4-2) ended up with the loss in relief.  He gave up
3 runs and 1 hit in 1 and 1/3 innings.
