Brooks Robinson slammed a homerun at Crosley Field where the Buffalo
Nickels beat the Escanaba Yoopers 4 to 2.
 
In the bottom of the 3rd inning Buffalo scored 2 runs.  Escanaba had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
The win went to David Cone(4-5) who allowed 1 run in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Jack Chesbro recorded the save, his 7th.  The loss was charged to Bob
Gibson(3-11). 
 
Buffalo remained hot, improving their record to 38-37.  They now have a
record of 8-2 in recent days.  Tommy Lasorda was pretty down after the
loss.  'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 1-9
in the last week or two.  That won't get it done.'
 
SASKATOON AT MEMPHIS

Amos Rusie was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Memphis Belles defeated the Saskatoon Commodores
by the score of 5 to 2 at Polo Grounds.
 
Rusie(6-1) was solid in the win.  He surrendered only 4 hits and 4
walks in 9 innings.  Memphis finished with just 5 hits in the victory. 
 
Roger Clemens(5-2) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed 5 hits and 7
walks in 8 innings.  'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed.  Man alive,
things were getting awfully grim,' noted Bill McKechnie.  'Now, we need
to string a bunch of wins together and turn things around!'
 
LAS VEGAS AT ANCHORAGE

The Las Vegas Miners and the Anchorage Gold locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Metrodome.  The final score was the Las Vegas Miners 5,
the Anchorage Gold 4.
 
Las Vegas won the game with a rally in the 8th inning plating 2 runs
using 3 hits.  Lou Gehrig led off and he tripled.  Jose Canseco stepped
up to the plate and he hit a deep fly.  One out later, Rick Ferrell
stepped in and he drew a walk.  Ray Dandridge followed and he lashed a
single.  Bill Mazeroski came to the plate and delivered a single. 
Although they lost, Anchorage did out-hit Las Vegas 13 to 10. 
 
Bullet Joe Rogan(6-9) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 innings.
Billy Pierce got the save, his 1st.  Don Newcombe(2-5) took the loss in
relief.
 
With this win, Las Vegas has a 36-39 record.  They have been 6-4
lately.  Anchorage has a record of 44-33 after the loss.
 
HONOLULU AT ORLANDO

First baseman Rafael Palmeiro jacked one out of the ballyard and had 4
RBI and Warren Spahn pitched 9 strong innings as the Honolulu Islanders
defeated the Orlando Wave 8 to 2 at Ebbets Field.
 
Palmeiro led the offense for Honolulu. He doubled bringing in two base-
runners in the 3rd inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in
the 5th inning and stroked a single in the 9th inning.  Honolulu kept
the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different
innings. 
 
Spahn(4-10) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. The
losing pitcher was Smokey Joe Williams(4-7).  He was hit hard and gave
up 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT DES MOINES

It was an amazing offensive display in Wrigley Field where the Cheyenne
Gunslingers beat the Des Moines Pickers by the score of 11 to 10 in.
 
Mickey Lolich(3-2) pitched good enough to get the victory in relief. 
He was reached for 5 hits and 1 walk in 3 and 2/3 innings.  Des Moines
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Dan Quisenberry preserved the game for Lolich, recording his his 9th. 
Sparky Lyle(3-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.  Cheyenne knocked
him around a bit, as he gave up 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. 
 
Third baseman Paul Molitor knocked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI in a losing
cause for Des Moines.

Candy Cummings pitched a complete game at Tiger Stadium as the
Alexandria Dukes won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the New
Orleans Pelicans by the count of 5 to 4.
 
Alexandria had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
on 2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Tony Perez was the
sparkplug when he lined a single.  Wee Willie Keeler came next and he
drew a walk.  One out later, Fred Clarke stepped up to the plate and he
doubled making Alexandria the winners and sending the 34,767 fans home
happy.  Alexandria had 15 hits for the afternoon. 
 
Cummings(5-2) allowed 4 runs on the game. Ferguson Jenkins(3-5)
absorbed the loss.  Cummings and Perez were really whooping it up in
the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory.  As Sparky
Anderson noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's
attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even
you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
