Judy Johnson had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Saskatoon Commodores were
badly beaten by the Cheyenne Gunslingers, 15 to 4.
Johnson led the offense for Cheyenne. He singled in the 3rd inning,
doubled which scored a run in the 4th inning, slapped a single knocking
in a run in the 5th inning and lined a one-base hit which brought home
a run in the 6th inning. Cheyenne kept the scorekeepers busy in the
4th inning with 4 runs on 6 hits and the 6th inning when they had 4
runs on 5 hits. Cheyenne dominated offensively as they scored in 6
different innings.
Whitey Ford(6-5) allowed 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jim Bunning(4-7) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for
11 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.
ESCANABA AT LAS VEGAS

Ed Lopat pitched a complete game at Yankee Stadium as the Las Vegas
Miners beat the Escanaba Yoopers by the count of 3 to 2.
Escanaba lost it in the 7th inning when Las Vegas did all their damage
with 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Ed Delahanty led off and he
tripled. Gary Carter came next and he would ground out. Buck Ewing
then delivered a single. Hughie Jennings followed and he laced a
single. Tris Speaker came up to bat and ripped a base-knock. Ted
Lyons then unleashed a wild pitch. Las Vegas had a total of 10 hits for
the game.
The victory went to Lopat(3-6) who went the distance allowing 2 runs.
Ray Brown(5-6) was the loser. He gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 6 and
1/3 innings.
BUFFALO AT HONOLULU

Left fielder Al Simmons hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI and Hilton
Smith tossed a complete game as the Honolulu Islanders defeated the
Buffalo Nickels by a score of 13 to 4 at Shibe Park.
Simmons enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He hit a bases-empty home
run in the 2nd inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 6th
inning and banged out a single scoring a run in the 6th inning.
Honolulu rapped out 15 hits for the night.
Smith(8-3) allowed 4 runs on the game. Addie Joss(4-4) took the loss.
He was unable to control the Honolulu offense and allowed 8 hits and 3
walks in 5 innings.
DES MOINES AT ORLANDO

In a startling finish the Des Moines Pickers staged a comeback then
held on to win over the Orlando Wave by a score of 6 to 4 at Ebbets
Field.
Des Moines won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 4
runners on 2 hits. The big moment was provided by Jackie Robinson who
disappointed the partisan crowd when he laced a base-hit bringing home
two baserunners. Des Moines out-hit Orlando for the game, 10 hits to
7.
Sparky Lyle(2-2) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Jose Mendez(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. Mendez was feeling
apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get away. What a
miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One minute
things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
MEMPHIS AT ANCHORAGE

Ozzie Smith collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as the Memphis
Belles bested the Anchorage Gold 9 to 6 at Metrodome.
Anchorage was unable to claim the lead after Memphis went ahead in the
7th inning plating an isolated run. After two were out Chuck Klein
smashed a solo-shot out of the park. Joe Dimaggio stepped up next and
he drew a walk. Memphis ended up with 13 hits for the game while
Anchorage had 10.
The win was credited to Eddie Plank(4-7) who went 8 innings allowing 6
runs. Phil Niekro got the save, his 6th. Don Newcombe(2-3) was hit
with the loss in relief. Memphis knocked him around a bit, as he gave
up 7 runs in 4 innings.
Memphis continued their winnings ways improving their record to 33-34.
They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss, Anchorage has a
record of 4-6 lately, 39-28 overall.
ALEXANDRIA AT NEW ORLEANS

Juan Marichal was able to finish what he started and was credited with
a complete game at Fenway Park where the Alexandria Dukes beat the New
Orleans Pelicans by the score of 3 to 1.
Alexandria claimed the early lead in the first inning when they tallied
2 runs on 3 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Both
teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored
after that point.
The winning pitcher was Marichal(7-3) who allowed 1 run for the game.
The loss was charged to Satchel Paige(8-5). He pitched 8 and 2/3
innings giving up 10 hits and 1 walk.
