Jerry Koosman(5-4) and Randy Johnson(5-9) treated the Saskatoon fans to
a fine pitching duel at The Astrodome. The Saskatoon Commodores
eventually emerged as victors over the Cheyenne Gunslingers by the
score of 2 to 1.
Saskatoon took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring a single run
on 2 base hits. Cheyenne made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.
Koosman got help from Early Wynn who earned his 4th save. Tony
La Russa was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one,
we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple
more white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

Charlie Gehringer rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Yankee Stadium
where the Escanaba Yoopers beat the Las Vegas Miners by the score of
4 to 2.
Gehringer was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a
fine day at their team's expense. He cracked a two-run shot in the 6th
inning and blasted a solo shot in the 8th inning. Escanaba out-hit Las
Vegas for the game, 8 hits to 3.
Babe Ruth(7-3) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Bruce Sutter
recorded his 13th save. Dazzy Vance(3-1) was given the loss in relief.
He surrended 3 homeruns in his 4 innings.
'He gutted it out' Tommy Lasorda said of Ruth. 'I was very impressed
by his tenacity.'
BUFFALO AT HONOLULU

Right fielder Babe Ruth cracked a homer and had 4 RBI at Shibe Park as
the Buffalo Nickels beat the Honolulu Islanders by the count of 8 to 0.
Ruth led the offense for Buffalo. He launched a three-run homer in the
1st inning, ripped a base-hit in the 5th inning and singled which plated a run in the 9th inning. Buffalo finished with 14 hits while Honolulu ended up with 5.
The victory went to Eppa Rixey(6-3) who went 7 innings, allowing no
runs. The loss was charged to Warren Spahn(2-10). He was touched for
3 homeruns in his 8 and 1/3 innings of work.
DES MOINES AT ORLANDO

Vic Willis was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Orlando Wave defeated the Des Moines Pickers by a
score of 4 to 3 at Ebbets Field.
Des Moines was unable to claim the lead after Orlando went ahead in the
7th inning plating one baserunner. Orlando managed 10 hits in their
victory.
The victory went to Willis(6-5) who went the distance allowing 3 runs.
Curt Schilling(4-9) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits
and 5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
MEMPHIS AT ANCHORAGE

Homeruns- E.Lombardi(5th), B.Bonds-2(18th)
Big Bill Foster struck out 11 batters and Barry Bonds slammed 2 home-
runs and had 4 RBI as the Anchorage Gold outscored the Memphis Belles
9 to 3.
Bonds had a big day at the plate. He delivered a solo blast in the 1st
inning and belted a three-run homer in the 2nd inning. Neither team
managed to score after the 3rd inning.
Foster(12-3) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. The losing
pitcher was Stan Coveleski(3-8). Everyone seemed to enjoy the
performance of Foster - except Memphis. Bill McKechnie lamented, 'He
just was 'on' this afternoon. He was keeping our guys off balance all
game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game
for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'
ALEXANDRIA AT NEW ORLEANS

The Alexandria Dukes came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil
the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score was
6 to 5.
Alexandria scored the winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3
runs using 4 hits. Roy Campanella led off and he delivered a base-hit. After an out was recorded, Clarke was safe at second on a stolen base. Eddie Collins then lined a single, and an error was also committed. Wade Boggs stepped in and he drew a walk. Ben Taylor stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Ty Cobb kept the inning going and slapped a single. Honus Wagner came next and he delivered a one-base hit. Wagner took second on the throw. Roberto Clemente then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Alexandria had 12 hits for the afternoon while New Orleans had 9.
Sandy Koufax(10-3) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings.
Koufax got relief help from Goose Gossage who gained credit for his
7th save. Babe Adams(7-4) was hit with the loss.
