Ted Williams hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI and Cy Young had a complete
game as the Des Moines Pickers staged a dramatic comeback over the Cheyenne
Gunslingers by a score of 9 to 8 at Wrigley Field.
Des Moines had the game winning rally in the 9th inning plating 3 runs on 4
hits. Arky Vaughan led off and keyed the rally when he laced a base-hit.
Williams stepped into the batter's box and he slapped a single. Al Kaline
then drew a walk to load the bases. Buck Leonard followed next and he
slapped a one-base hit. Leonard took second on the throw. After an out was
recorded, Molitor came up and he stole second base. King Kelly kept the
rally going and was walked intentionally to load the bases. John McGraw next
to the plate and he ripped a single. Des Moines totaled 18 hits on the
night.
Young(2-8) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 8 runs. Mickey
Lolich(3-3) was hit with the loss in relief. 'What a game!,' Young said
afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't believe it!'
