Bill Dickey slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI and Walter Johnson shutout
Cheyenne while allowing the Saskatoon bullpen a day-off at The
Astrodome as the Saskatoon Commodores beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers 8
to 0.
 
Johnson(5-7) put on a good performance.  He didn't allow much, just 7
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 4.37 to 4.01. 
Saskatoon rapped out 11 hits for the night. 
 
The losing pitcher was Jack Morris(4-6).  He was unable to control the
Saskatoon offense and allowed 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

At Yankee Stadium, the Las Vegas fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Bullet Joe Rogan(5-8) finally bested his Escanaba opposite, Catfish
Hunter(2-8), by the score of 2 to 1.
 
The game was won by Las Vegas when they scored a run in the bottom of
the 8th inning.  Hughie Jennings drew a walk.  Tris Speaker followed
next and he drew a walk.  Jesse Burkett then laid down a sacrifice
bunt.  Lou Gehrig came up and he was walked intentionally to load the
bases.  Mike Schmidt came to the plate and hit a deep fly.  Las Vegas
had only 4 hits for the night. 
 
Allie Reynolds gained credit for his 10th save.  Hunter was the losing
pitcher.  The Las Vegas ballclub's record now stands at 32-35.  With
the loss Escanaba now has a record of 28-39, worst in the division.
 
BUFFALO AT HONOLULU

Carl Hubbell was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Buffalo Nickels topped the Honolulu Islanders by a
score of 3 to 1 at Shibe Park.
 
Hubbell(10-4) was very good in the win.  He allowed only 7 hits and no
walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.45 to 4.16.  Honolulu went
down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th. 
 
Tommy John(6-4) was hit with the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 8 hits in
6 and 2/3 innings.
 
DES MOINES AT ORLANDO

The Des Moines Pickers nipped the Orlando Wave 5 to 4 at Ebbets Field
in a hard fought contest.
 
Des Moines scored the deciding run in the top of the 9th inning.  John
McGraw reached on an error.  Bullet Joe Rogan was next and he stroked a
single.  Two outs later Al Kaline came to bat and laced a base-knock. 
Des Moines banged out 10 hits on the afternoon. 
 
The victory went to Sparky Lyle(3-2) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Smokey Joe Williams(3-6) absorbed the loss.  He
surrendered 9 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings. 
 
 
ALEXANDRIA AT NEW ORLEANS

Roy Campanella cracked a homer and had 4 RBI and Christy Mathewson
completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Alexandria
Dukes outscored the floundering New Orleans Pelicans 13 to 4.
 
Campanella was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a
fine day at their team's expense.  He lost the ball over the fence for
three runs in the 2nd inning, laced a one-base hit bringing in a run in
the 3rd inning and banged out a single in the 6th inning.  Alexandria
managed 17 hits in their victory. 
 
The winning pitcher was Mathewson(11-5) who allowed 4 runs for the
game.  Joe McGinnity(2-6) was the loser.  He was touched for 5 hits and
2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
