Designated hitter Lou Brock slammed a homerun as the Cheyenne
Gunslingers defeated the Saskatoon Commodores by a score of 3 to 1 at
The Astrodome.
 
Cheyenne took the lead for good in the 4th inning scoring a single run.
Saskatoon was out-hit by Cheyenne, 8 hits to 5. 
 
Vida Blue(6-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings
and allowing 1 run. Dan Quisenberry got the save, his 7th.  Red Ruffing
(2-1) was the losing pitcher.

First baseman Lou Gehrig had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Pete Alexander was
able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game
at Yankee Stadium where the Las Vegas Miners beat the Escanaba Yoopers
by the score of 16 to 7.
 
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting
performance provided by Gehrig.  He cracked a two-run shot in the 1st
inning, laced a base-hit in the 4th inning, slapped a one-base hit in
the 6th inning and doubled bringing home two baserunners in the 7th
inning.  Las Vegas provided plenty of action in the 6th inning which
saw them plate 4 runs on 6 hits and the 7th inning when they had 6 runs
on 5 hits.  Las Vegas kept the pressure on throughout the contest as
they scored in 6 different innings. 
 
The victory was credited to Alexander(6-5) who went the distance,
allowing 7 runs. Don Drysdale(4-5) was given the loss.  Las Vegas
scored big getting 6 runs off him in 5 innings. 
 
 
BUFFALO AT HONOLULU

Mark McGwire ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Buffalo Nickels
bested the Honolulu Islanders 6 to 5 at Shibe Park.
 
McGwire was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a
fine day at their team's expense.  He lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run in the 1st inning and popped a two-run clout over the
fence in the 6th inning.  Honolulu had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short. 
 
The win was credited to Tim Keefe(7-7) who went 7 and 2/3 innings
allowing 2 runs. Keefe got help from Old Hoss Radbourn who earned his
4th save.  Greg Maddux(3-6) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 7
innings and surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks.
 
Connie Mack was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this
kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all
professionals.  We've been through this many times - it's the nature
of the game.  We'll be fine - as for me - I'll be ready to go again
tomorrow!'
 
DES MOINES AT ORLANDO

Rube Waddell dominated striking out 10 Des Moines batters as the
Orlando Wave defeated the Des Moines Pickers 3 to 0 at Ebbets Field.
 
Waddell(4-5) dominated Des Moines hitters.  He allowed just 4 hits and
3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.16.  Orlando rapped out 9
hits for the night. 
 
Andy Cooper(2-2) was tagged with the loss.  When asked about his
strikeout total for the game, Waddell offered, 'The fan's really got
into it.  It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout totals up there
in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of course, it
would be all for naught without the 'W'.'
 
MEMPHIS AT ANCHORAGE

Amos Rusie allowed Bill McKechnie to rest his bullpen, tossing a
complete game and third baseman Maury Wills had 2 base hits at
Metrodome as the Memphis Belles beat the Anchorage Gold by the count
of 6 to 3.
 
Rusie(5-1) pitched a fine game.  He was reached for 7 hits and 4 walks
in 9 innings.  Memphis had 10 hits for the afternoon. 
 
The loss was charged to Dwight Gooden(3-7).  He gave up 3 runs and 1
hit in 3 and 2/3 innings.  This win by Memphis continues their recent
hot streak.  In their last ten games, they have a record of 8-2.  For
the season, they are 34-35.  With the loss, Anchorage has a record of
4-6 lately, 40-29 overall.
 
ALEXANDRIA AT NEW ORLEANS

34,531 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park.  The Alexandria
Dukes topped the ice-cold New Orleans Pelicans by the slimmest of
margins, 7 to 6.
 
Alexandria started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their
half of the first as they scored 6 runs on 6 base hits.  The key at-bat
was by Joe Jackson who silenced the crowd when he belted a three-run
homer.  New Orleans threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short. 
 
The victory was credited to Don Sutton(5-6) who went 7 innings,
allowing 4 runs. Kent Tekulve earned the save, his 1st.  Pud Galvin
(5-5) took the loss.
 
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even
without his best stuff,' Sparky Anderson said after the game. 
'Sutton did not have command of his pitches most of the night, but
he proved he really knew how to pitch!'
