Sandy Koufax retired 13 batters on strikeouts and left fielder Fred Clarke
cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Alexandria Dukes bested the Memphis
Belles 4 to 3 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Koufax(11-3) was solid in the win.  He allowed just 8 hits and 3 walks in 9
innings.  Memphis threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
 
Mickey Welch(8-4) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 8 innings giving up 9
hits and 5 walks. The Alexandria fans were thrilled by the performance put
forth by Koufax, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most.
'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation with a
loud cheer.' Sparky Anderson said following the game.
