Catcher Yogi Berra slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and David Cone racked up
an impressive total of 13 strikeouts at Crosley Field as the Buffalo Nickels
beat the Des Moines Pickers 9 to 4.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Berra. He ripped a solo home run in the 2nd inning and cleared
the fences for a two-run home run in the 5th inning. Buffalo finished with
13 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to Cone(3-5) who went the distance, allowing 4 runs.
Curt Schilling(4-10) was charged with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in
his 7 and 1/3 innings.
Bobby Cox was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see
that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the
strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
