Smokey Joe Williams struck out 11 batters as the Orlando Wave topped
the Escanaba Yoopers by a score of 4 to 1 at Baker Bowl.
 
Williams(6-7) gave Orlando a solid outing.  He surrendered only 6 hits
and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.59.  Orlando managed 13
hits in their victory. 
 
Don Drysdale(4-7) was the loser.  He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings giving
up 13 hits and 1 walk. 'Everything felt great' Williams said. 'I had a
good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'
 
MEMPHIS AT SASKATOON

Three Finger Brown tossed a complete game shutout as the Memphis Belles
beat the Saskatoon Commodores by a score of 2 to 0.
 
Brown(6-5) pitched a solid game.  He gave up just 6 hits and 2 walks in
9 innings improving his ERA from 2.92 to 2.69.  Saskatoon tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 
 
Jim Bunning(6-8) was charged with the loss.  He pitched 6 and 1/3
innings allowing 5 hits and 6 walks. Walt Alston was subdued when
questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of loss takes a while to
get over, but heck, we're all professionals.  We've been through this
many times - it's the nature of the game.  We'll be fine - as for me -
I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'
 
ANCHORAGE AT HONOLULU

Willie Mays knocked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Honolulu Islanders
outscored the Anchorage Gold 5 to 2.
 
Mays had a good evening at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out of the
park in the 1st inning and belted a three-run homer in the 3rd inning. 
Despite losing, Anchorage out-hit Honolulu 7 to 4. 
 
Mike Mussina(5-1) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings.
Mussina got help from Leon Day who earned his 12th save.  Big Bill
Foster(13-5) was tagged with the loss.

Whitey Ford allowed Tony La Russa to rest his bullpen, tossing a
complete game and Jim Bottomley had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the
Cheyenne Gunslingers defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 6 to 2 at Forbes
Field.
 
Cheyenne set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 2 runs on
2 base hits.  Joe Tinker opened up the inning nicely when he doubled. 
Bottomley was next and he hit a single.  Mickey Mantle then drew a walk.  After another out, Harry Heilmann came to bat and hit a sacrifice fly.  Lou Brock was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim.  Both teams totaled 6 hits on the afternoon. 
 
The win was credited to Ford(8-6) who went the whole way allowing 2
runs. The losing pitcher was Ferguson Jenkins(3-7).  He gave up 6 hits
and 5 walks in 8 innings. 
 
 
DES MOINES AT LAS VEGAS

Buck Leonard went yard and had 3 RBI and Curt Schilling was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Des
Moines Pickers bested the Las Vegas Miners 8 to 3 at Yankee Stadium.
 
Leonard was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors.  He tripled bringing in
a run in the 1st inning, banged out a single in the 3rd inning and
bombed a two-run dinger in the 5th inning.  Des Moines banged out 13
hits on the night.
 
Schilling(6-10) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs.
Bullet Joe Rogan(6-11) suffered the loss.  He was touched for 11 hits
and 5 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
BUFFALO AT ALEXANDRIA

Shortstop Honus Wagner had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Alexandria Dukes
defeated the struggling Buffalo Nickels by the score of 11 to 5 at
Tiger Stadium.
 
Don Sutton(8-6) earned his pay with a solid performance for Alexandria.
He surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.  Overall Alexandria
out-hit Buffalo 15 to 6. 
 
Tim Keefe(8-9) was given the loss.  He allowed a few too many base-
runners giving up 6 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
