Lefty Grove whiffed 10 batters and King Kelly had 4 hits and 3 RBI at
Wrigley Field where the Des Moines Pickers beat the Buffalo Nickels in
10 innings by the score of 11 to 10.
 
The score was tied at 10 after nine.  Des Moines won the game in the
10th inning.  Kelly clubbed a solo home run giving Des Moines the victory and sending the 48,926 home-town fans home happy.  Des Moines won despite being out-hit by Buffalo 16 hits to 12. 
 
The victory was credited to Tom Henke(1-0) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Jim Kaat(1-1) took the loss in relief.  He allowed just 1 run and 1 hit in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Pop Lloyd had 2 base hits as the Saskatoon Commodores defeated the
Escanaba Yoopers by the score of 5 to 4 at The Astrodome.
 
Saskatoon went ahead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning scoring a
single run.  Escanaba threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. 
 
Wilbur Cooper(2-0) went 6 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Hoyt
Wilhelm gained credit for his 3rd save.  Bob Gibson(1-1) was the losing
pitcher. 
 
 
HONOLULU AT LAS VEGAS

In a tight game it was the Honolulu Islanders 6, the Las Vegas Miners 4 at Yankee Stadium.
 
Hilton Smith(1-0) pitched okay, well enough for the win.  He surrendered 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  Las Vegas had 11 hits in the game while Honolulu had 8, but Honolulu had the more timely hits. 
 
Red Faber preserved the game for Smith, recording his his 1st.  Bullet Joe Rogan(0-1) was charged with the loss.  He pitched 9 innings and
surrendered 8 hits and 4 walks.
 
'He gutted it out' Connie Mack said of Smith.  'I was very impressed by
his tenacity.'

Frankie Frisch had 3 base hits and Satchel Paige struck out 10 batters at Ebbets Field as the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Orlando Wave 5 to
4.
 
Paige(2-0) pitched a solid game.  He allowed just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'.  Orlando had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Smokey Joe Williams(0-2) was the loser.  Casey Stengal was impressed with Paige and his 10 strikeouts.  'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

In a close game the Anchorage Gold got by the Cheyenne Gunslingers by the score of 5 to 3.
 
Anchorage scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning with the help of 3 hits.  The critical plate appearance was by George Davis who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he popped a two-run clout over the fence.  Cheyenne made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 
 
The winning pitcher was Big Bill Foster(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Kid Nichols recorded the save, his 1st.  Vida Blue(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He gave up 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings and saw his ERA jump from 1.29 to 3.68. 
 
Tony La Russa was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals.  We've been through this many times - it's the nature of the game.  We'll be fine - as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'
 
ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

The Alexandria Dukes had an easy time of it at Polo Grounds defeating the Memphis Belles by a score of 6 to 1.
 
Alexandria promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they came up with 2 runs on 3 hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.  For the game Alexandria out-hit Memphis 13 to 7. 
 
Christy Mathewson(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 1 run. Mathewson got help from Goose Gossage who earned his 1st save.  Three Finger Brown(0-2) was tagged with the loss.  His ERA ballooned from 4.50 to 5.63 as he allowed 6 runs in 8 innings.
