One run was the difference at Shibe Park as the Honolulu Islanders
defeated the Las Vegas Miners 3 to 2.
 
Honolulu plated all the runs they needed in the 1st inning with 3 runs
on 3 base hits.  Barry Larkin got things going when he lined a single.
Joe Gordon was next and he banged out a single.  Willie Mays then hit
a deep fly.  Hank Aaron stepped in and he popped a two-run clout over
the fence.  The Las Vegas batters didn't put up a fight in the 9th. 
 
Urban Shocker(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 4 and 1/3 innings.
Pete Alexander(2-1) took the loss.  He pitched 8 innings allowing 5
hits and 2 walks.
 
 
ESCANABA AT SASKATOON

Babe Ruth allowed Tommy Lasorda to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game as the Escanaba Yoopers defeated the Saskatoon Commodores by a
score of 3 to 1 at The Astrodome.
 
Ruth(2-1) had a solid outing for Escanaba.  He went 9 innings allowing
6 hits and 6 walks lowering his ERA to 3.38.  Escanaba had a total of
8 hits for the game. 
 
Jerry Koosman(1-1) was charged with the loss.  He gave up 2 runs and
6 hits in 6 innings.
 
BUFFALO AT DES MOINES

Mark McGwire went deep and had 2 RBI at Wrigley Field where the Buffalo
Nickels beat the Des Moines Pickers by the score of 8 to 4.
 
Buffalo set the tone of the game in the first inning when they came up
with 2 runs on 2 hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Billy
Williams who quieted the crowd when he cracked a two-run shot.  Buffalo
ended up with 13 hits for the game while Des Moines had 9. 
 
The victory was credited to Carl Hubbell(3-0) who went 8 innings,
allowing 4 runs. Curt Schilling(0-3) was tagged with the loss.  He
allowed 4 homeruns in 4 and 2/3 innings of work. 
 
 
MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

Don Mattingly connected with a 'big fly' at Fenway Park where the New
Orleans Pelicans beat the Memphis Belles in 11 innings 3 to 2.
 
Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings.  New Orleans
won it in the 11th inning.  Vern Stephens laced a base-knock.  Wells
was safe on a stolen base.  Tommy McCarthy then hit a single resulting
in an exciting win for New Orleans and a wild post-game celebration by
the home town fans.  For the game New Orleans out-hit Memphis 13 to 8. 
 
Robin Roberts(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 1/3
innings and allowing 1 run. The loss was charged to Phil Niekro(0-1)
in relief. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

Tony Lazzeri had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Cheyenne Gunslingers
topped the Anchorage Gold in 10 innings by a score of 9 to 6 at
Metrodome.
 
The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings.  Cheyenne was victorious
in the 10th inning.  The big moment was provided by Lazzeri who
deflated the crowd as he delivered a single scoring two baserunners. 
The score went back-and-forth with the lead changing 5 times. 
 
Roy Face(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Kid
Nichols(1-2) was the loser in relief.  Cheyenne scored big getting 4
runs off him in 2 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Catcher Biz Mackey had 2 base hits and Vic Willis pitched a complete
game shutout as the Orlando Wave outscored the Alexandria Dukes 2 to 0.
 
Willis(1-1) was solid in the win.  He gave up just 6 hits and 1 walk in
9 innings improving his ERA from 7.88 to 3.71.  Alexandria threatened
in the 9th but their rally came up short. 
 
Don Sutton(0-2) was given the loss. 'We just made a lot of mistakes,
mostly mental,' Sparky Anderson said.  'It's bad enough when the other
team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really
bad.'
